"The GP4000s had no grip in the wet and commuting on them was just plain dangerous"

"I have lost minutes on my commute"

Both of these statements are utter fiction smile To actually think you're suggesting gatorskins have more grip than 4000s is hilarious.

I've only tried hardshell Gatorskins but they had all the poise and grip of Bambi.

If anyone wants some 25C Mavic Yksion or 28C Conti Grand Sport let me know... I seem to have acquired a pair of each along with my new wheels, when what I really want is a set of 25c 4 Seasons!

He's right though, and it's the 10 punctures or more that I find unbelievable smile

I've ridden GP4000s a year round for as long as I can remember - took the skinny versions to the Alps in April - the best tyre I've ever ridden.

I bought some Gators after suffering about 10 punctures on my GP4000s. Then managed to have 2 last weekend on the same wheel. The joy was immense.

The GP4000s had no grip in the wet and commuting on them was just plain dangerous. The gators are a much slower tyre, i have lost minutes on my commute but at least i know i can stop when i need too. The plan* is to use these over the winter and then switch back to summer tires which should give me more speed in the spring/summer.

700*25s

  • Not sure how this is a plan TBH, to ride fast i need to ride fast so could be a flawed plan.
No grip on 4000s, but you like Skaters? I can't say I've lost minutes on my commute purely down to the rolling resistance of any tyre?

This has been a massively helpful thread.

I ordered some 4 seasons 700 - 23c for my bike. Someone at work suggested I get 25's but I really didn't want fat tyres. I hope I have done the right thing.

I used to switch from GP4000s to Gatorskins in the winter, both 700x23, and found the Gatorskins had much less grip, felt very wooden at the same pressure as the 4000s, but they did have excellent puncture resistance.

I've just swapped to a pair of Michelin Pro4 Endurance v2s in 700x28 (on a pair of the new wider Mavic Ksyrium Elites with 17mm internal width), and have to say I'm really impressed. They have plenty of grip despite being slick, and felt very lively even at 75psi. It's too early to say how robust they'll be, but others seem to have had good experiences.

Why not run larger tyres, clearance issues? Personally I find 28's are the best thing in winter with less pressure. 4 seasons do ok, roll well and last a decent amount of time.

Surprised not one mention of Schwalbe Durano Plus..been using these for years...superb puncture protection..can be a bit tight to fit out the box but worth the effort.

That's surprising. I had the 28s on 17mm rims and they measured only 25mm. Whereas the GP400Sii in 28 measured 30mm on the same rims and at same pressure.

I'll see if I can get a pic of my wheels tomorrow, GP4000s 28mm on 24mm wide Cero rims. Plump, not fat.

Running the exact same tyres myself on 18mm internal DT Swiss rims. Plush is the word that comes to mind.

I run 4 seasons @ 25 and they come up narrow on my rims, 25 isnt wide, im sure 23s will be OK, but 25 would be my choice and then 28s
