Saw some poor sod do it the other evening going round the big roundabout at Westfield/Shepherds Bush. Lucky for him he fell onto a grassy bit (and managed to not hit his head/helmet or anything when he hit the deck). Unfortunately it then took him a good while to get unclipped while on the floor. Of course, being a Club Member myself I wouldn't have dreamed of asking him if he needed a hand getting up - imagine the shame - I didn't need to anyway, the girl on the ladies shopper did it when she'd stopped at the next red phase of the lights.

I've done it twice with Look clips. Once when I was thinking to myself, 'I haven't fallen over while trying to unclip for a long time now!!'

A dangerous thought that. Almost as dangerous as shouting to a crowd of people, "Watch this!"

You've not lived until you've renewed your membership to THAT club next to a tourist coach in Parliament Square.

I think I feature in a number of holiday snaps/albums.

Saw a courier join the club with his fixie earlier. I did laugh.

Can vouch that they come unclipped without even noticing in the event of an accident, too

Watched a friend do this 20 odd years ago.

Funniest thing ever.

Out mountain biking while at Uni in Hull and we did quite big Saturday rides, 5 or 6 hours. Friend in a white cycling top!

Out one wet weekend and several of us rode through a LARGE farm track puddle, but friend decided not to ride it but get off and ride up on the higher edge of the track and not in the farm tractor tracks.

So up un the bank, he clipped in his first foot.

Held in to fence.

Clipped in the other foot.

Fence gave him an electric shock!!!!!

And he toppled elegantly straight over into the very puddle he was trying to avoid!!

Came out one half completely brown, other half clean!!

If I wasn't so wet from the ride I would have pissed myself laughing. As you can tell, Still dining out on it 20 years ago.

Awesome.

V.

I thought that there must be a topic about this hehe

Joined 'that club' last night, twice. Thought I had the hang of it - first outing last week, no issue. 37 mile ride on Monday morning, no issue. Couldn't work out what all the fuss was about.

Last night however, in the cold, dark, rain, not one but TWO incidents. The first at a road junction, no idea what happened, just lost all momentum and felt myself going over, slow motion as I hit the tarmac. Massive bruise on my arse this morning hehe Second time there was a tight turn which I normally have to put a foot down for but thought I'd chance it, bottled it at the last minute, couldn't get my foot out and crashed onto a metal fence - lovely bruises down the inside of my arm.

Found it really difficult in those uncertain moments where you take your foot out but not sure if actually going to need to stop - the shoes are very hard and slippy in the rain when just perched on the pedal trying not to clip in.

I guess its a confidence thing, think I lost all mine last night though !

As a recent convert to cycling (running has buggered my knee) I got my SPDs two weeks ago now. The first ride out was slightly nerve-racking but passed without incident much to my surprise. Complacency bit hard the next day and coming up to a junction I completely forgot I was clipped in...I *just* got my foot out in time and in a major panic. Whilst I've not joined the club proper yet, despite 3 more near misses, I think it's only a matter of time!

Top tip, get your bike in the kitchen and practice clipping in when you're stationary smile

Might try that, or perhaps in the lounge where there is a softer landing !

Work tops are at exactly the right height for leaning on, you can get both feet up smile

Is it just my smutty mind or was I supposed to giggle at that ?

Just checked your profile to make sure I wasn't going to offend, it's you - blimey !

Need to get some practice in, got a 50 mile charity ride on Sunday on a new bike that's not even arrived yet. Could do without the complication of worrying about my feet. So what do you do once you've unclipped and not sure if you're going to stop or not ? Or does it just not become an issue as you get confident at quickly unclipping when necessary ?

Yup, I'm definitely me hehe

Once you're used to it it comes naturally (phnarr) you can pop the arch of your foot on the pedal to maintain momentum or clip back in once you're clear of whatever...

Most embarrassing recent fall was just the other weekend.

I live on a hill & a couple of weekends ago I get up early & get the bike out. Standing by the side of the road I check traffic, clip in push off up the hill, I try to clip in the other foot, speed drops to near zero, I now realise I'm in top gear with one foot clipped in, the other slips off the front of the pedal & I collapse in a heap by the kerb side.

Good start to the day

That made me chuckle OP. I can't recall the last time I did it, but rest assured have done many times.

The last time I was with someone who did we had just descended the Col de la Croix de Fer. My mate was struggling big time, and we came to a reasonably major junction on the way back along the valley road. It was a classic pulling up to the T-junction, slowing down, the acknowledgement we were going to stop. We both stopped alongside one another. And he then just fell away from me in slow motion. It is no exaggeration to say I almost pissed myself. The French motorists spectating were not amused. hehe

Lifted wholesale from another thread (originally submitted in 'Pictures from today's ride' back in mid-August). I couldn't find this topic at the time, but it deserves a mention in here. Platinum membership for me, I reckon....

Part way up the Bradley to Lower Wield road the surface was so bad I felt compelled to take another picture.

Which was a mistake, as when I tried to start off again, I renewed my membership to 'The Club' and the results can be seen here in the (admittedly post-ride) pictures of my freshly peeled knee. Comedy fall whilst clipped-in not funny any more. 24 miles done, only another 26 to go!

Many thanks to Alastair, in Lower Wield, who opened his door to me and let me clean the grit out of my knee in his bathroom, and helped me out with Germolene and a plaster, which allowed me to get home without worrying too much about the state of my knee. Thank you, sir. Your kindness was much appreciated.
All healed now, and thankfully pain free aside from removing the dressings from my hairy legs wink

Nasty peel, that. I've a multi-coloured rainbow set of bruises on my legs / knees... all part of the fun :-)

Ow. I've been a member of THAT club for quite some time...

Also a brief member, until I caved in to the clear need for my bike to be serviced, of the 'set off at lights chain slips muller spuds' club although in my case I also hammered my hamstring on the bear trap pedals causing much pain und bleeding... None of the cars behind me laughed, think they were too busy wincing.

Shortly followed by adding the kitchen to the list of locations where you've fallen off/over hehe
