Almost joined the club last night on my ride home.

Filtering through traffic and was following a car which tried to squeeze between another car and a traffic island, they loads of room to pass but the car just stopped dead.

I, stupidly, didn't anticipate the car stopping and had a massive wobble - I was only saved by leaning against the bollard on the traffic island.

Very, very close to going over - lesson learnt.

I've done this twice directly as a result of not getting out of the pedals.

The first time was on a road bike, and I fell gently to the grass verge on a side road near Richmond Park. I was totally unhurt, but had an audience of 3 pedestrians and 4 people in cars at the traffic lights I'd dozily not unclipped for. They were somewhat perplexed at my laughter when asking if I was OK.

The second time was on my MTB on Leith Hill. There was absolutely nobody around, and to be honest I really could've done with someone being around, as I managed to tear a bicep tendon grabbing a tree branch to keep myself upright, before then sliding 10 feet down a bank with the bike on top of me when said tendon tear caused me to let go of the branch. cry It was 9 months before that healed itself to the point where I could ride a bike again. frown

Did my first off-road ride clipped in today

All went well, I managed to get in and out for each gate and the road junctions at the beginning and end, so was feeling pretty pleased with myself...

..Rode into our road and up the drive, the Mother in Law was at the Lounge window ironing and saw me coming up the drive....

....I came to a stop and then remembered i was clipped in...luckily I was next to the grass so, oh so slowly, toppled left and of course unclipped as I hit the deck!

Wife and Daughter then appear at window to point and laugh

So i am now a member...

I joined a couple of months back. In Holland on a cycling tour, fully laden with panniers, and near the beach cycling towards a small ferry pier. There's a duneland nature reserve on my right and I have a few minutes spare so head for the information board where a couple of walkers are reading about the habitat and birdies and so on. I roll to a stop next to them, completely forget to unclip and keel over heavily right beside them. It was a sandy landing but I didn't half wallop my ankle off the crank. They turn to me startled and ask if I'm ok. I'm still there, on the ground, clipped in and holding the bars. "Fine thank you" I say meekly.

I decide I can't really stay down there, and get myself out from under the bike, dust myself off nonchalently despite the sharp pain in my ankle, and limp towards the information board as if nothing has happened. The couple - they're Dutch - say "Ok, if you're sure" and we all look at the info board and gaze thoughtfully towards the nature reserve.

"Look" says the man to me, pointing from the map on the board to the dunes. "Here, is birds. And here, is lake. And here [points to where we are standing on the map] is falling over"

Cue gales of laughter from the cloggies.

If they made a sticker I'd buy it. yes

Mandy didn't see a car at a junction, I grabbed her to stop her cycling in front of it, unfortunately I forgot I was clipped in...

"Why didn't you put your foot down"? hehe

I did that the other week in front of my wife and neighbour after trying to startle them by screeching to a halt behind them.

These are my favourites so far, very funny smile

Love the fact that rather than touch a strangers arm Dave fell on top of them instead smile

Don't have clips btw, and after reading this I never will.

Just out of interest, once you've fallen over is it still difficult to unclip? I have an image of you lot looking like a ladybird on its back struggling to get the right way up again smile
No, that's the real pisser, it's remarkably easy to unclip when you're horizontal biggrin
I had to wriggle like a Thai masseur to get out of my pedals. This only made the spectators apoplectic with hilarity.

After a brisk lap of Richmond Park this evening, leaving via Roehampton Gate, the car in front of me stopped. This I hadn't anticipated. The feeling of outright panic struck me as I just managed to get my right foot out. Unfortunately at this point I was tipping left. In cycling terms, this particularly locale would have to be one of the busier.

Thanks to the Saab driver behind me chortling to himself, that made me feel so much better.

much like a motorbike with a pillion i'd imagine. the stoker stays clipped in whilst the pilot unclips. the last thing you want is one to unclip on the left and the other to unclip on the right...

Why, that way at least one can put a foot down.

Done it a couple times, worst one was waiting at lights, light goes red and traffic queues up, little man goes green, I cycle across and instead of going up the nice slope at the other side, decide to save myself 4 seconds by cutting across and wheelying the front wheel onto the curb.

Of course I ddint wheelie quite high enough, front wheel smacks directly into the curb and bike stops dead, and I sit there clipped in falling at an unbelievably slow speed to the ground. Pride hurt more than anything else, could see a few laughing people in their cars from the corner of my eye but avoided any eye contact, picked up my bike and rode off as quick as I could, before stopping down the road to nurse a sore hip, knee and elbow.

Wouldnt be without them though make a massive difference, worth the odd fall, and now I have them very loose and am much more able to get my foot out quickly.

I 'decided' to join last weekend.

We were on the Reivers Coast to Coast run heading to Carlisle. We thought we'd missed a sign so stopped to check the map. Rather than stopping I figured that balancing would be a good bet (like when I was a kid on my BMX). I balanced next to my mates for a minute then felt myself starting to lean.

Lifted foot off pedal - wouldn't move - panic set in - still wouldn't move - over I went.

I landed on the top of my mate's front wheel and slid onto the tarmac. His reaction was, what the f..k did you do that for?

I now have a sore right arm, which took my weight and a nice burn/tyre track between my shoulder blades.

I now know to ALWAYS unclip, even if I don't think I need to!

I had the very opposite the other day. I met a MTB coming the other way round a tight corner. We both skidded to a halt, apologised, figured out who was going which way then cycled off.

It was only afterwards I realised I hadn't unclipped the whole time yikes

Is it me or are these falls always so slow motion to you that you "think" you have time to sort it out.

After a 20 odd mile ride of successful clipping and un clipping I pulled into my quiet road to see my neighbour. He commented on my bike I turned right to show off my bike leaned left and at a practical standstill speed I leaned left.

The second time was years later on some rollers whilst the Mississippi watched the apprentice. I rolled to one side of the rollers countered but obviously countered too much and flew off the other side. Now this was going to hurt anyway but added with he fact I was new to rollers I was still in between the door of the lounge for balance.
