MTB Winter Lights?
Discussion
Managed to blag a couple of random o-rings from my LBS. Just had it out on an hours test ride in the drizzle. Some observations:
1. These probably aren't the correct o-rings and are a bit weak but even with two on it was slipping all over on every tiny rut. Infuriating. Will try a bit of grippy tape on the bars but I think I need a rigid mount.
2. The wide angle lens necessarily saps a fair bit of throw, but there's still enough to make decent progress. Will try another run with the normal lens to compare. I suspect the ideal solution is two lights, a wide angle on the bars and a helmet mounted spot.
3. It's not quite as bright as I was expecting from internet pictures and reports, but I've no experience of any other lights to compare it with. For the money spent though it's a billy bargain and has to be recommended.

This mount looks virtually identical to the ones I have, but here for only 8.99

To solve the bar slippage issue I just put a piece of silicon hose between the bars and the mount. This gives the bars more thickness for a tighter o-ring and gives something for the mount to grip onto.

I ordered mine on 3rd Oct and it arrived today.
Took it in the back garden for a test tonight and the neighbours came out because "I thought it was a helicopter"
It is very bright, I'm very impressed although have nothing to compare it with.
I shall try to mount to my helmet first as I'd like one on both helmet and bars. If this fits to my helmet ok then I'll order another with a wide angle lens and fixed mount for the handlebars. If not I'll use this on the bars and look for an alternative helmet light.

Still haven't got mine from the 26th Sept (posted 27th). I e-mailed them a couple of days ago to no reply, but looking at their delivery schedule on the actual item page on eBay, if it goes past 22 working days (which will be this Friday for me) they give a refund
My first two with smooth reflector arrived quickly, but last one with orange peel reflector was ordered 26th sept and I missed the delivery on Sat. So you might get yours this week. Posted 05/10 from china.Fartomatic5000 said:

Unfortunately, water has got into the rear one and it wouldn't turn off until it had dried out, but the front one is excellent. Rode along some totally unlit roads today and in all seriousness I have had worse illumination from dipped lights on classic cars. Very good indeed.

Looks like I'm in the same position as you Tony. Mine was ordered on 26th Sept and posted 27th Sept.Nothing received as yet.
Let me know if it turns up, I'd be grateful.
Thanks
Matt
I considered doing so (a policeman left a note on it wanting to buy it - how very random!!), but we didn't agree a price, he went for another, and a few months on now I'm glad I didn't sell it as I wouldn't have known what to buy to replace it! I would have needed somethign that could take my bike, and my drum kit (I'm a drummer, y'see). I don't drive it much anymore so it doesn't cost a lot (touch wood) and every now and then I have a good blast (driving home from Silverstone to Kent at 1am on Saturday night, for example) and I realise how utterly great it is
Good decision.
I was in the same boat, had it 5 years, no idea what to replace it with. Had thought of a discovery 3 to shove bikes in the back/kids stuff etc but couldn't bring myself to sell it.
Love it to bits and always enjoy driving it. A real bargain if you ask me. So I just bought a Thule roof rack/bars/cycle carrier off ebay for £200 and will be keeping the S4 for the foreseeable future.
May be tempted with a 3.0 when they come down in price a bit, maybe this time next year.
