I need to get one or the other as I'm finding it impossible to get out during the week whilst it's still light and the weather is so bad I don't want to ride wearing a life jacket and carrying a paddle.

I have a fairly good budget, would like to use http://www.trainerroad.com/...

Which one would you choose and why?

I've had a turbo (Tacx) and thought it OK but never really got on with it. Sold it after 6-10 uses.

It wasn't so much the turbo itself but the other considerations such as swapping tyres / wheels to use it.

Given the choice again I'd give rollers a try - ideally in a garage

It depends what you are hoping to get out of it. Rollers are good for technique and building core strength but turbos are better if you are trying to develop power or just general fitness.

I have the Tacx Satori. You don't really need to spend more than £200 IMO.

This. The Satori can be picked up from Wiggle for £150 IIRC too. Bargain!

Whatever you get, invest in some "motivational" material from The Sufferfest. Got "Downward spiral" the other day. Jesus. H. Christ.

Go and buy a decent fan, you will sweat allot and then some so a decent fan is a must for a session lasting +1 hours.

I prefer rollers as its another skill to learn and more fun. Just note I cant speak for a TT but the rollers do make a good amount of noise.

I love my rollers, pop my other wheels in my cross bike with smooth tyres, bingo nice warm indoor training. Had a turbo in the past, but happily back on my rollers, I find them really good as well for recovery rides, just to get the legs turning over, but I'm racing twice a week at the minute, thanks to a mid week floodlit cross series. They are in the main quieter than a turbo, and the bike feels more natural as it can move. Currently using the Elite Arion's which are parabolic rollers, so there is a lip at each end, as you get close to the edge the tyre makes a squeek just to forewarn you of impending edge. I find having my motorbike in front really helps me stay central on the rollers so I slipstream that as I ride smile

I've just bought a TT after a few weeks deciding if a TT or rollers are right for me.

I decided that although the rollers look more fun, I'd rather not have to concentrate on balance, I'd rather just watch the telly to pass the time.

Also i have mine set up in the shed as the noise would be rather annoying for my wife if it was in the house. Having watched some roller beginners on YouTube I decided that it wouldn't be long before I impaled myself on some item of gardening equipment so opted for the safety of the TT.

I've used my old 90s xc bike so I don't have to worry about swapping tyres as that is all its used for. I purchased a TT specific tyre, a cheap heart rate monitor, trip computer and a head torch (no power in my shed and its almost always dark when I go out there) I also bought a couple of shelf brackets and put up a small shelf just in front of the bike that I put my iPad on so I can watch tv downloaded on iplayer to pass the time.

I'm pretty happy with it so far as I find it really difficult to fit in any regular cycling so struggle with fitness. I've so far been doing 30-60 minutes most days, either early in the morning or late evenings. Perhaps not the best training plan but I'm going by the theory that it's got to be better than nothing!

Thanks all, I went for a turbo in the end after much deliberation. Should be here in a couple of days and then I'll get an idea of my boredom threshold I guess.

What are the view's on here of the Lemond?
I like it, but never see it recommended so am wondering why not.

Right, I got impatient and bought a Tacx T1000 Antares (from Germany, cheaper than eBay auctions oddly). It's on its way, so I shall report back any comedy comings off in a few days smile

How on earth do you start a roller? I mean, how do you get up and riding on it!?

Noise, lots of noise!
Have a look on youtube for some videos of it in action. It’s supposed to offer the most realistic feel of any trainer on the market, but the high noise level seems to put a lot of people off. Would love one myself, but living in a terraced house I suspect the neighbours would be none too impressed. However if you don’t have that problem they seem to be very well regarded.

Kurt Kinetic Road Machine - chosen because it seemed to be favoured by the people behind TrainerRoad and that's the system I plan to use it with.

Not cheap though...

Can this thread be sticky'd. The roller v's turbo debate comes up regularly.
In the absence of a working search function it might be worth while having one thread for people to add to.
