Rode down the coast from Sorrento to Amalfi and back ... V steady as I had the Mrs in tow. Only 60 miles but 24,800ft of climbing and some stunning views.

Thanks! I did the same ride on Tuesday and didn't quite believe the elevation ... not steep climbs, just very long and winding. First climb out of town started from the hotel was about 10 miles long. No flat roads out here!

If that is there and back then you did as much going down as up, so that is 30 miles to climb 24,800ft, which is 1 in 6.4. You and your missus must have some legs on you...

I call BS on this. Or most likely an accidental extra zero.
A relatively hilly ride in the south downs gives you roughly 100ft a mile. So 60 miles = 6,000 ft.
I rode up an alp the other day in Chamonix straight up, no down and it was 6 miles with 2,200ft of climbing pretty much on the granny gear the whole way.
Obviously if I had come back down it would have doubled the distance with no extra climbing.

The Etape is roughly 100 miles with just over 10,000ft of climbing.
Again if you stopped at the top you might get 50 miles and 10,000ft but 2.5x as steep as the Etape on an out-and-back?
No way.

Everest is 29000ft above sea level, so I'm guessing an honest typo or a really cheap cycle computer.

No custard as sat by the pool on my iphone, however here is a Strava screen shot. Didn't bring the garmin so used the iPhone app. Blame Strava if it's incorrect! smile

Off-topic but which col? I'm on my way there now with the bike in the back, hoping to squeeze in a ride up the Forclaz. The weather does not look promising though.

Here's his activity data. Profile wasn't hard to find, given that he published his own Strava ID...

http://www.strava.com/activities/189747048/

Looks pretty much as he described it. If he wasn't climbing, he was going down the other side. I can't see any flat bits.

Closest I can get to that proportion of climbing, since joining Strava, was...

Distance = 51.7mi
Moving Time = 4:22:03
Elevation = 5,387ft

...in the Surrey Hills last November, and I thought that was a 'monster' of a hills session wink

You, Sir, need to join the "100 Climbs" Strava club. I know none of your Sorrento/Amalfi rides will have any climbs on the '100' list, but do it, just to see how your elevation figures compare with some of the UK's most committed 'hill chasers' wink

Go into the ride - there are 4 main segments that cover the climbs.
1st hill - 1,194ft.
flat bit afterwards - 988ft.
next flat bit with a little bit of hill 2 - 890ft.
the 2nd hill - 1,043ft.

You are missing about 20,000ft!

Think about it - there are two big hills here both top out at 1,600ft.
Did you really climb BOTH of them 7-8 times!!

Calm down, walm! It's the Strava iPhone app, so maybe it's not all that accurate, but every single one of those little 'spikes' along the route adds 200-300 feet to the climbing total. It's like those £130 bills when you get to the checkout at Waitrose. All the items are relatively inexpensive in isolation, but they soon add up wink

Here is the ride 2 days before ... Slightly different route but similar elevation.

I've ridden plenty of rides between 8k and 10k of elevation, but not sure what's going on here but I'm glad it's giving a few people some entertainment on a Friday.smile Anyway, must dash, got a wedding to attend.
