Tried out the new bike and the journey to the office this morning. Only took 30 minutes compared to a best car time of about 20 minutes. Shame we're heading into winter now and I'm only really a fair weather cyclist at best.

Luckily it happened at the end of the freeride track not two corners before or I'd have been in A&E.

Note to self: Always check the brake mounts are tight before riding!

Personally I'd trade getting the front wheel off quickly for having encapsulated brake mount bolts!

Not from today but was on holiday in Hawaii last week, hired a bike and rode Mt Haleakala - 35 miles up and 10000ft of climbing. Gradient was fairly easy, just a long slog. Good views of the island from the top and a more bearable 15c, it was 30c at sea level.

Half a mile or so of slight downhill with roots and rock gardens etc. Some of the really good guys could fly down on their downhill bikes at 25-30mph but now there's a group of idiots who can supposedly do it at 70mph.

Thanks - took me just over 5 hours to climb from Paia up to the crater, 1hr 15 back down! I'm not really built for long climbs at 95kg but it's an easy gradient, just very, very long. I underestimated how much food I'd need so really slowed down with 2500ft of climbing left and only 1 gel - there's nowhere to get food past 2500ft.

Can recommend Maui Cyclery for bike hire if you do ever go, I got a Litespeed for about £40 and they give you spares, helmet and jacket too if you want them.

Been away for a couple of days staying at a lodge near Hawick.

Day 1 doing part of the Romans and Reivers trail:

Day 2 was meant to be out on the road bike, however an instrumental error (I forgot my shoes) meant it was out for some road miles on the mountiain bike (as it turned out most of the day was a wash out with rain anyway so not a big deal).

Out at Alemoor resevoir:



A quick stop at the site of the old Redforgreen school (random being the middle of nowehre, was open from 1855-1955 now just a small cairn remains).



And finally on the return, cant remember the last time I seen one of these still in service:

Great few days and really looking forward to a return in the summer.

Looks like a good trip - I've been meaning to explore Craik forest for year, I did realise that there are mountain bike trails there though!
