First go on the new bike. Can probably lose half to three-quarters of an inch off the stem, saddle down a tad too. Everything else spot on. Came over the heathland as the rain swept across the Solent. New Forest can have its moments, even on a road bike...

Nice looking bike, that Road out to Beaulieu can be a bh if it's windy, great with a tail wind though!
It's the one between Ashurst and Lyndhurst that I hate. Cars doing 80-90 mph, beeping you just because they have to overtake you.I think that the problem car drivers have with cyclists using the A35 between Lyndhurst and Ashurst is that there is a cycle lane for its whole length, so "why aren't they using it" etc etc. Path is ok on a mtb but not sure I'd like to ride my road bike along it, bit bumpy and gritty.
Not sure that I've seen anybody doing that kind of speed along it though, but 50-60mph probably seems like 80-90 when you're on 2 wheels.

There is? I've never seen it! Would make sense to have it tarmaced though. Not sure that I've seen anybody doing that kind of speed along it though, but 50-60mph probably seems like 80-90 when you're on 2 wheels.
I used to drive down that way quite a lot, and would regularly have people overtaking me, despite doing 60-70 mph. I have no problem with people going quickly down there (as you can see, I do), but when you're doing 60+mph, a 1 metre gap when overtaking a cyclist isn't really enough...
I will investigate this path. Thanks for the heads up!

That cycle path is due to be worked on allegedly

Another maintenance project that has been rolled into the plan is the resurfacing of the A35 Lyndhurst to Ashurst cycleway. The £700,000 track was opened six years ago and the authority now plans to spend £130,000 "upgrading" its surface.
The NFNPA says DfT approval has already been granted for this expenditure, which is curious as it's hard to see how this amounts to capital expenditure and not maintenance. It's also not clear if the necessary permission has been obtained from Natural England and the often vociferously anti-cycling New Forest Verderers.
New Forest Cyclist describes using this path as "terrifying" as the narrow grass strip between the path and the A35 puts cyclists "inches away from HGV's travelling at 60mph in the opposite direction". It also appears to be substantially narrower than the DfT's recommendation of 2.7m for a bidirectional path.
