A local solo-ish spin out today, which, while feeling under the weather didn't do any harm other than slow me a bit. Met up with another chap on his own so showed him some different tracks and trails, which he has now strava'd to try on his own. He kept commenting on how I managed to climb steep bits on one gear and managed not to die on rooty sections as well. I put it down to those mud tyres and luck rather than skill and fitness today. He wasn't converted to move his Spesh full susser to get a singlespeed though. Anyway, an autumnal photo from the woods.
Enjoying the larger wheeled singlespeed a lot, with a 20 minute clean time when you get home is also a big bonus.

Finished off the ride with a sprint along the canal into the centre of Coventry, as was concerned about decreasing light levels and not having any lights with me.

New Mill Lane ford on the Blackwater River...
Two of the bearings (with less than 1,000 miles on them) from the front hub after the ride...
...no wonder the hub was sounding like a bag of spanners in a tumble dryer
I've now bought a genuine Shimano replacement axle and cones/bearings from a different shop. This other shop stocks the genuine part because "ah, we've been having trouble with 'pattern' cones and axles when we've fitted them to Shimano hubs in the workshop, which is why we now stock the Shimano part". So it may well not be my inept spannering that has caused the problem. Fitting the Shimano axle tomorrow morning, so fingers crossed that it lasts a wee bit longer and solves the problem.

Had an epic adventure up to the Dales yesterday ... all planned a few weeks ago, so the weather wasn't really as we'd expected. Nevertheless, we made the trip out despite a hurricane force head wind for the first 60 miles and temperatures well below freezing. Two mechanical's added at least two hours into an already long day ... the first being a seized caliper 30 miles in (rider went home and abandoned) and the second was a collapsed Chris King free hub at the top of Buttertubs pass where it was -4 requiring us to push our man all the way to Reeth. One hell of an adventure but was glad to be home last night after 130 miles and over 8000ft.
I had the day off yesterday, so explored some bridleways on the other side of town:
