What is that tied around your headset and why?
Ah!

That.

Hmmm?

Okay. It's a sock. An old brown sock, which is twisted around a cable, and fixed with a strip of decorator's masking tape over the down tube. So that's the "What?" explained.

As for the "Why?"...

...strictly a temporary measure, while I got around to buying a frame protection kit or some 'helicopter tape'. That was very nearly a year, and 4,200 miles ago. It seems to work, and I've had other priorities over sorting out frame protection. I simply don't notice it, so it doesn't bother me. But I have chipped the paint on the seatstay between the brake bridge and the seat tube (it fell against the edge of a brick wall) frown Sadly, I don't think I'd have put the protection tape there anyway.

Alternative explanation? "Master gave Dobby a sock! Dobby is a free Elf."

That's a good life hack!* I love using old socks etc. for stuff! (Like storing a couple of gas canisters in my jersey pocket... smile

  • I have to say though, when I bought my SL5 I received a sheet of pre-cut clear helicopter tape patches to protect from cable rub etc.? It might be worth asking the supplying LBS if you didn't get yours?

Now I'm going to turn this thread into 'souvenirs from today's ride'...

I'd like to blame it on diesel on the road or mud or some idiot driver but... I think it was all my own doing frown

I think I just misjudged how damp and slippery it was, turning left into a T-junction (exiting Benwick) the bike just fell away from underneath me! Bugger...

Incredibly the only damage was to me, the bar tape and the lever tops! Somehow I managed to come away with the frame totally unmarked!

Luckily I had another 65kms to 'ride it off' although my left hand is very badly bruised! frown

I got my sheet of patches too. The one for the seat mast has gone on, but most of them had white 'Trek' logos all over them, and I didn't fancy having a bike that looked like it had taken a blast from a shotgun filled with logos. I have bought a frame protection kit, just not got around to fitting it so far.

Today's wee trip to Swinley...

...on my son's bike, because mine still isn't repaired.

ETA:

Spent the last mile of the ride home trying to avoid squashing dozens of these little fellas...

...which were crossing the lakeside road at Hawley Lake.

Hoping to do the Fred, so need to hit some steep hills. This is one of the only "double chevrons on an OS map" near me - Bignor Hill. Parts of this are 26%, briefly. The surface is broken, wet, muddy, covered in detritus...

The hill starts off with the steepest section, and then levels out around 5-8% for the next kilometre or so.

Two guys got out of this car, and started putting mountain bike wheels into frames. They looked a little surprised to see a road bike up here!

Bignor Hill is a dead end, with a car park on the South Downs Way at the top. I headed towards the coast via Bury Hill, which is the opposite of Bignor; wide, well surfaced and trafficked even at this time on a Saturday morning.

Scientifically researched and developed endurance sports nutirion...

Along with the usual local riding I've been back to Llandegla twice this last week. The weather last Monday was just too good to pass up showing a friend around...

Then went for a cheeky on Sunday. Bit muckier than earlier in the week but still fun as always.

Hopefully off to Afan this weekend.

My view today at 32mph!

And me after climbing the first part of Formentor and the lumpy road up to the fort! 117/3217 on that segment 1s behind David Lopez cheered me up after snapping a spoke in the morning.

Nice, and I thought I was pretty lucky. Tempted to link together the trail centre with some local cross country trails that dot the OS map sometime.

Bikes must be older than your Son. biggrin

Would they be an old set of Spinergys? Haven't seen a set on them in years.
