Meanwhile on the other side of the world, blistering heat and blue skys abound so myself and a few mates went for a ride on our retrobikes at our local trails.
Its true what they say about mad dogs and englishmen.. we had the whole place to ourselves haha
Pah, I'm not jealous at all... Looks like a lovely place for a spot of MTBing. Its true what they say about mad dogs and englishmen.. we had the whole place to ourselves haha
Although it's reasonably warm here at the minute I think I preferred it when temperatures were hovering around 0 a few weeks ago, at least it wasn't raining and the local trails were a bit more solid!

very jealous, not been to Afan since summer. Is the new skills area good? Are you local? Cwmcarn has some good riding not far away as well.
I'm local originally (IYSWIM) but been living in Sussex for the last 12 years so don't get to ride Afan as much as I'd like. Done Cwmcarn a few times too, although last time I was there I ended up in hospital, ooops! New skills area is excellent, there's 5 or so different routes with jumps and berms which make for a bit of fun after the slog of the climbing and before the final descent. There's a good review here:

Beware if you're planning to check it out, it's not well signposted. It's the other side of the road from the main Y Wal trail, next to the Bryn Bettws Lodge.

Thanks for the heads up, next mission up there is Feb or March. A few of us have this stupid notion of getting fit and doing some stage racing this coming year, so we need to get some miles in. We will probably get a barn in the area for a week, and take the wifes / dogs / kids and mix a bit of cycling with some walking / drinking / eating!New skills area is excellent, there's 5 or so different routes with jumps and berms which make for a bit of fun after the slog of the climbing and before the final descent. Ours were from Lysterfield. The repair works have been brilliant. Back up there on Thursday to give the new Anurysum and buckle down trails a blast. You up for it?
I was wondering - they looked familiar but wasn't sure. I'm at work on Thursday (boo!) but am always up for a ride! I've fired you a DM.Did a test ride to work this afternoon and was pretty happy with it only taking an hour to do the 9 miles, despite an extremely stong headwind on the A3052.

Did 25 miles today, down the Ogwen Valley if anyone knows it, pretty rough on the path going down so decided to come back on the A5. Somehow managed to end up with a horrendous headwind in both directions?
Ride was nearly cut short by a 3ft deep flood on the way down:
But hopping over the fence and wading through a boggy field got me round. Did let a load of ice cold water in through the cleat holes in the bottom of my shoes though!
Longest ride I've done since starting commuting to work a month or two ago. Found it pretty hard going, after about two and a half hours it was just like I'd hit a wall and my body had nothing left in it. From the other thread it seems like I might need to adjust my diet a bit, might've been a bit optimistic going out with nothing but water and a bowl of corn flakes for breakfast!
