That sounds very much like me.

And yes, the old bird sounded awesome. The howl, the roar, the smell of unburned jet fuel. Thankfully I'm not an emotional type when it comes to machines, so it wasn't at all 'dusty' in that field. Sad to know that it's the last time I'll ever see her fly, but all good things must come to an end. I'd come to terms with never seeing the Vulcan again when the RAF retired her (around 1993?). I saw the Biggin Hill display that year, so I'm very grateful to the VTTS team and all the contributors and sponsors who have kept her funded and fettled these last few years.

You should have said hello. Celtic Dragon of this parish snuck up on me and introduced himself just as the Vulcan was arriving. We had a fair old chat (nice bike, CD, by the way) and after the show we rode off toward Biggleswade together until the first roundabout. I had to bail pretty quick, as I'd left my (non-driving) wife with the car at Wimpole Hall, and needed to get back before the car park got locked. I had driven up from Farnborough to see '558 for the last time.

Lovely views across miles and miles of productive agricultural land, wonderfully quiet roads, and pretty villages and churches. I really enjoyed my ride both ways between Wimpole and Old Warden. Especially the ford on High Street, Sutton.

I'll upload some photos if I can work out how to get them from my camera to this shonky old laptop that has no memory card slot.

She'll be over Farnbourgh next Sunday mate. She is flying 2 final loops on the weekend, Northern on Sat and a Southern on Sun.

Sadly, although XH558 will be over Farnborough on her farewell tour next weekend, I'm highly likely to be elsewhere at that time. It's university 'Open Day' season, and with my youngest looking toward next year's intake, this month or so has been a whirl of days/weekends away to whittle down the shortlist. Hence yesterday's trip up to see her display, as we'd ticked Reading University off the to-do list the day before. I'm taking Boy to Swansea next weekend, so seeing the old bird won't be impossible, somewhere along the route, but it'll be highly unlikely.

Spotted Yellowjack. Or to be more precise I was out running on the MOD land near Minley and could hear a cyclist behind me so kept to the left (even though some bits were a bit muddy).

Cyclist came past and shouted "Dude! You need a bike! It's quicker, and there'll be less mud on your shoes" hehe

I did clock the jersey but didn't want to shout out "oooh PH" as you rode past as I thought that would be a bit weird.

Out of interest are there any decent riding clubs in the area? I got my road bike earlier this year and have always ridden alone. I think my fitness should be good enough now that I can ride without holding people up.

Hello again!

Sorry if I sneaked up on you a bit, but I didn't want to 'ding' the bell until those puddles were out of the way and there was a bit more space to get past. Cheers for moving over, as well.

Shouting "oooh, PH" would've been no more weird than me riding a full-on carbon fibre road bike with 23mm tyres down that track at this time of year. Foolish, for sure, but it turned out alright in the end. I'd looped around the training area for another gawp at the awful traffic queuing both ways on the Minley Road.

There are a few clubs in the area, I think the biggest is FCCC (Farnborough and Camberley Cycling Club). There's also a small group who ride out of Silvester Brothers, the bike shop in Cove, a couple of times a week. Steve Caddy or Henry Silvester could advise on times and dates.

I've not ridden with any clubs/groups yet, and like you I do almost all of my riding solo. I'm likely to keep it that way, too, as I like to pick and choose my own start times, and to be able to bail out at short notice if the weather sucks or something else comes up.

I went out with FCCC this Sunday, they do three rides on a Sunday 1 club run, non-stop 80-100km about 28/30kmh average, another coffer/cake run. These leave at 9:30 am from Speedies Chinese in Cove. There is another group who go slower and stop I think from the same place at 10 am.

The club run go up towards Windsor, Surrey Hills way or Alresford amongst other routes. Sunday saw about 20-25 riders good bunch of people, sensible riding and good fun.

They are now running chain gangs on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

That isn't the norm for me, I usually ride solo most of the time.

You can also try Farnham Cycling Club (don't know the name), Hoops Velo have a Sunday shop ride and VC Meudon do a ride on Saturday morning from Pedal Heaven, although I think they aren't taking new members.

Thanks. I like the idea of a club as it will help with motivation (I tend to fit in riding around everything else) and also I don't really know a lot about bikes and I think I could learn a lot.

I had assumed you were on a cyclo-cross bike as that's definitely not the place for a road bike!

No, that was a Trek Emonda SL 6. I ride it all sorts of less-than-suitable places, because a) I'm an idiot sometimes, and b) Why the hell not?

I'm very much of the opinion that "a bike's a bike" and I'll ride almost any bike anywhere, provided the tyres will stand up to the conditions.

So the next time there's a Swinley ride organised, not having a mtb won't be an excuse? wink

Swinley might be pushing it a little. Even for me... wink

It's the tyre clearance in the frame, dear boy. I just can't get decent CX rubber in there at all. Otherwise I'd be all over it. Perhaps I could come up and play by myself on the Green Trail, while the rest of you go out and smash Blue and Red?

I've got a few bikes I'm 'watching' on Ebay right now, so the whole "no MTB" issue might have ceased to be a problem soon. If you get wind of anyone selling a small/medium MTB suitable for Swinley and similar trails, and a bit of XC racing, feel free to pass on the details!

Right. Own up. Who was it?

Warren Row Rd, near Warren Row, heading for Crazies Hill this afternoon. The Owayo short sleeved jersey, with the yellow trim.

"Allez!" good sir. Hope you enjoyed your ride out this afternoon. Weather was spot on, I thought, and the temperature just right for baring the old legs, too. My first ride in shorts for a week or two, and it only served to demonstrate that I'd moved to long bibs too soon.

Sorry I couldn't stop to chat. I was trying to catch the chap ahead of me, the one on the 'winterised' Specialized Sequoia.

Nice to see another jersey out on the road... thumbup

Guilty as charged sir... Was taking an extended commute home - ended up being 25 miles instead of the usual 8. Nice to see another jersey on the road. As you say it was a lovely afternoon for a ride!

Ah! The old "extended commute" powerplay? Nice.

There was a time (a long time ago now) when I did ALL my riding on my commute. Two miles in, twenty eight home, at least three days a week. And it was indeed nice to see another jersey out on the road...

Corrr, its been a while since anyone spotted a PH jersey.

Anyway, a "sort-of" spotted. Picked my bike up from Griffs (Crowthorne) earlier, which prompted me to look at their facebook page, saw this pic:

Who's that then?

Well it's not me wink

What new bike, DC?

I'm still looking for a new MTB, still undecided. Too much choice really, and I can't make my mind up. Sadly, the delay has meant that my budget is dwindling too...

Not a new bike - getting my full sus fettled: new set of bearings and cables. It deserved it after a few years of service.

Ah, OK!

I just read too much into the "picking up my bike" bit. I've been up to Griff's a few times now (one of t'staff was quite disparaging about my old brake bodge, would you believe? eek - how very dare he!)

I've also found Mountain Trax and need to drop by their Barkham premises for a decent look. I badly need a new MTB, especially after dragging my old steel road bike around the Fleet Pond area today. Mud clogging up the mudguards several times tells me it's not really a suitable machine for off-road use in any kind of damp conditions.
