"How do they do it?"

As others have stated they do it by mixing up the components. They shout Ultegra then whisper about the chainset and brakes which price wise seem around the 2300/Sora level. They have probably saved £200-300 there alone.

It is a very good value bike but one built with a target price in mind to get their headline "Full carbon and Ultegra for under a grand!"

I would personally prefer one with full 105 than the odd high/low-end pick and mix they have created.

Just purchased a planet X carbon frame with part Ultegra group set for £999 . Paid £40 more for carbon seat post and stem and upgrade tyres and a few bits . ..That's got to be a £1800 bike ,how do they do it ? All the components are top notch ,nothing cheap on the bike .

Crazy to think I could get it for just £833.33!!! (No VAT or duty in Gibraltar).

That's a cracking deal!

I can tell the difference as my last bike had 105 (which is perfectly good IMO). The Ultegra brakes are amazing compared to my old cantis and they even work in the wet. Which is nice...
Yes, but the point a couple have made is that you're getting only a couple of bits from the groupset which to the typical customer of this bike is probably enough to make a decision, you're not getting the brakes, the chainset etc etc, the bits you're not getting are important bits!
I have the brakes, the chainset, even the fking cables hehe

The front change is night and day away from the 105 smile The nice thing is you can spec the bile however you want.

The way they do it is by sourcing direct and passing the savings on to the customer.

I got that bike when they did the deal with Sram Red (front & rear mechs, shifters). It was £999. It had Rival chain, rear cassette and chainset.

For the price I couldn't buy those parts cheaper elsewhere, and I got frame, wheels, bars, saddle, etc for that price.

Has it really got 700x35mm tyres on?
And if so, why??

I get that they want a build with cheap tyres to hit their price, but surely there are cheap 23mm tyres to be had? I'm surprised it actually fits 35mm in the frame...

I strongly suspect that they're 700x25 tbh... but an odd typo.

If you go to the ordering page, they're actually 23s. Odd typo though, as you say.

Its not a complete groupset for a start. Frames are also single colour.

I am going for a Planet-X specific bike fit tomorrow at the southern retailer. Not been that impressed with their southern agent so far. No custom builds, no servicing, no demonstrators to ride and the only bikes I could look at were actual client bikes and of course they come into the shop and go a agin once the client has picked them up.

Planet-X direct have been a bit better, but its £90 for me to go up there and back on the train. Apprently they are launching a Ultegra equipped N2A bike at the end of the month. I'm interested to see how much that will be as thats the groupset I'm looking at.

Thanks for your comments ,regarding The Ultegra bits on the bike does it matter if they are an old model ..?

Tried Evans cycles and other bike shops and they could not come close .

Is the chain set Shimano FC-R565 10 Speed equivalent to the 105?

I can't see it mattering that its the outgoing model. You can keep hunting, but I think the only thing that will come close VFM wise is Ribble.

After my visit to the southern distributor for PX yesterday evening, I'm now much happier. The guy was really helpful and gave me some great info and it turns out that he might be able to do a custom build for me.

I was originally looking at an N2A based build, but having looked at a Pro Carbon, it could be everything I need for much less cash outlay. Built in cables would be nice, but I've managed 15 years with cables outside the frame. and in pearl white, the Pro Carbon looks great smile

P X definitely do custom builds. Mine's even got odd length cranks which isn't a very popular option biggrin

Serious question. Why do you have odd length cranks?

Maybe he has odd length legs?

Not such a silly idea, as I had a mate who was nicknamed 'Weeble' due to his having one leg significantly shorter than the other following injuries sustained in a car accident.

Well duh, I've got odd length legs hehe

Lost a couple of inches out of my left femur thirty years ago, the guy at the bike fit suggested odd length cranks would help. So obviously I bought a whole new bike biggrin

I've got a 165 on the left and a 175 on the right and it's a lot better climbing when I get out of the saddle. The thinking was I might actually be able to get a KOM with a half decent bike smokin

N2A/Ultegra is on my shopping list - I don't need wheels, so a complete bike may not be the answer, but we'll see what they come up with.
