The rear derailleur on my commuter bike was getting very sloppy (the rivet holes in the body had flogged out, resulting in quite a bit of play) and it was shifting like crap. So, I went online and found a well-priced Deore mech and ordered it without looking too closely at the description other than making sure it was 9 speed and long cage). Turns out that it's a "rapid rise" derailleur, which means that the shifting is reversed (the thumb lever now puts it into a higher gear rather than a lower one). I fitted it anyway, and although it has partially fixed the shifting issues, it's still not right and I need to replace the cable as well rolleyes

Once that's done, then no doubt end up spending the next several weeks accidentally shifting down when I want to shift up and vice-versa smash

Had first ride out on my road bike in a while, decided to give it a clean and sort out some of the indexing on the front derailleur. Hadn't realised how filthy the drive train was, and spent a good hour cleaning it all back up and getting the front derallieur at the right tension.

When I first touched the chain it was like thick grease and crud, not nice stuff! Thankfully had some rubber gloves to hand so didn't end up a complete state (although I do need to get some swarfega!)

Next job is similar on my MTB, but that is totally banjaxed after winter riding so I may take that one to the LBS as I think a new front derallieur is needed (cage is rather bent) as well as sorting tension and indexing..

Received my first commuting puncture in about 3 years today, I changed the tube and all was good until I arrived at work and chucked my specs on. Nice slit in the tyre with the tube slightly poking through, I need new tyres but will boot it for now, need to ride home lol..

Bled the front brakes on my hardtail. Then tried to install some new tyres on my hunt wheels....

Because they are tubeless, on of the tyre beads was almost glued to the rim, had to resort to cutting the tyre off and then discovered the rim tape that hunt use is falling to bits furious

Built a new front wheel DT Swiss EX471, Sapim Race black spokes, Hope Pro4 Boost front hub with Torque caps, tubeless taped and valve, Magic Mary Snakeskin on tubeless . Then swapped the fork on my bike to the new to me 160mm Lyrik I got off eBay. So nice new front end quite a bit burlier, was suprise the 160mm Boost Lyrik is 160g heavier than a 160mm Non-boost Pike, dropped 60g off the wheel.

The rear calliper on my bike was a bit sticky. I took it off, cleaned it and doused it in GT86. It is still gummed up and the spring is not working.

New one ordered from Wiggle. Are these repairable?

Bought a Scott Scale hard tail last week 2nd hand off facebook, great condition but previous owner installed a 50mm chunky DH stem and a 35mm bar.

Bar is nice and saved me buying one, stem is horrible and for a 31.8mm so ugly gap as well. swapped in a new 70mm Raceface 35mm stem and it looks much nicer.

Need to swap out the crap disc brakes for some XT ones I have but bad back prevents this for now frown

After riding to work every day during the beastfromtheeast, I've decided it might have killed my chain. The snow and slush, combined with the salt seems to have rusted the cassette and chain.

Tried cleaning it today with mucoff, and although it's a bit better, it's still not great. But at least the front mech now works.

If you get a bit of surface rust it shouldn't matter too much. Now it's clean, lube it, ride it (use a spread of gears to massage the cassette) and the rust will disappear. Maybe don't leave it too long before cleaning again, I don't know how abrasive the rust particles are once dislodged.

I ordered a new chain for the bike I've been riding during the winter this week because the ruler is showing 1/16th elongation over 6 inches. It's done 2.8k km since mid November when I built it up so it might be a bit soon mileage wise but some of the weather has really been horrible and I don't always have time to clean and relube the drivetrain mid-week if there's a proper soaking. Rear mech, chainset, cassette etc. were all new so I don't want to chew them all up just yet.

Gave my winter/commuter bike a thorough wash and fitted new rear pads today.

After giving the cassette some TLC I made the mistake of measuring chain stretch which came in at over 1%
The bikes done 3000km and is ridden through winter and sometimes off road

The cassette actually looks fine but Ive ordered a new one anyway and will cross my fingers with a new chain but expect the worst

Cheers

Its been a hard week for me and the bikes

Tues 13th: XTR front derraileur gave up and sheared itself appart

I just put that down to it being the 13th but I guess bad luck comes in 3's.

Weds 14th:
I take bike no 2 on the commute today...
Riding on a few mini jumps on the way home and after a few seconds out of the saddle I hear a crunch

My 10 speed chain link has just given up...sigh

Thursday 15th:
Im now on bike no 3 as i couldn't be bothered sorting out the chain on bike 2.The bad luck is definetely behind me now...
On my way to work - I go to open a farm gate while still on the bike and feel massive spike of pain in my right wrist

The gate latch had been sheared off by someone.... leaving a shard of sharp metal stick out of it ... and me with a hole in my glove and hand. Ouch

Friday 16th:
Against better judgement I decided to take bike no 4 today as bike 3 still had blood on it.
No major incidents on the ride but someone at work had moved my bike to clean the floor and left me with a small scratch on a seatstay which Im really not happy about!

At least this justifies the N+1 rule...might take bike 5 on monday.

So I've just spent today fixing, cleaning and greasing all the bikes used this week. Im just hoping next week goes better.

Today I spent some time with a piece of wood trying to chip ice off my rear mech pulley wheels. It didn't work, and the pulley wheels were frozen solid, so I rode home with the chain cutting a groove into the ice. Not easy to pedal, but got the job done. I hope the temperature climbs a bit tomorrow so that I can get this bike cleaned. It's the only complete one without a broken shifter cable at the moment. 6 bikes, and only one fit to be ridden... frown

I felt sorry for my usual commuting bike and braved the cold and snow to wash it it, degrease, change the chain and fit new brake blocks today. Numb fingers, but hopefully a smooth ride this week.

Rain just really wrecks it, brake gunk everywhere and a noisy scratchy sounding drivetrain once it drys out and I feel so guilty riding on that, fingers crossed I get a few days before I'm, cleaning it again.

Fitted chain tensioner, DX cog and spacers, removed the 53 tooth ring my old roadie is almost a single speed commuter play thing.

BB is so absolutely shot it's practically indexed! I've got a spare BB on my old mtb but having not needed to change BBs for years I've gone and lent my spanner to someone so that'll have to wait.

Getting a new chain and tubes on the way home tomorrow so she'll be built ready for yet more rain.
