Ride like a pro with Sky and Jag
Discussion
I'm doing the Midhurst one, but no info yet.
The first part, the ride out, I think is just first come first served. Two of my mates are in, but haven't uploaded any times to Strava (as have about half the group). The next stage should be very interesting, the ride and drive day, and I think they pick at random from the first day out. I doubt they can encourage a race-type event on public roads for 50+ amateurs can they?

I cannot imagine for a moment it will be competitive. Just a marketing jolly.
I thought Strava - if it is used for anything other than marketing - would be just as a check that the people would be able to make 50 miles without expiring for insurance purposes. However, given your mates experience I doubt it is even that! Just another form of mailing list.
I fear Dizeee may be taking it a little more seriously than the organisers originally expected.
Given the format it is entirely possible that you will get to be in a final with a lot of tubby middle aged dentists on Dogma, meaning you get the opportunity to site in a puddle of your own vom, whilst Chris Froome and Bradley Wiggins look on in a confused fashion as they are barely warmed up

I'm not taking it seriously at all.
All I have done is a 50 mile training ride, shaved my legs, changed my diet, stocked up on gels, had the bike serviced and recce'd the route
Good man.All I have done is a 50 mile training ride, shaved my legs, changed my diet, stocked up on gels, had the bike serviced and recce'd the route
In fairness I am going on a recce, but that's because I don't ever cycle on groups and I don't wish to embarrass myself!
Very strange experience that.
It took up my entire day for 55 miles of riding, and was all Jaguar marketing. The support car was not a support car, it was a Jag with the capability of putting one bike on the roof only, driven by a single rep who has no clue about bikes, full of inner tubes that had the incorrect length of valves for many bikes. If that's not enough, we never saw the car, at all, on the ride.
The ride was enjoyable, however there was FAR too much breaks. We stopped at Boxhill for 40 minutes for food e.t.c. then had to stop for half an hour en route due to a puncture. Due to a cock up with the start time we were hanging around for almost 2 hours at the dealer before we even set off. Therefore my day took from 0830 to 1600 once I had cycled there, done it all and cycled back. What I would have preferred was to crack it out all in one go with no stops, we could have been back within 2 and a half hours.
As for pace, fear not, this is not a fast ride. I travelled in the fast group (around 15 to 18 of us in total) taking turns on the front - we didn't even manage an 18 average despite over an hour of rest.
All in all it was ok, but it took too long, was not what it was advertised to be, and to be honest in hindsight I would have gone out on a proper club run. My 8 mile return cycle home was the only fast ride of the day yesterday.

Thanks for the heads up. if the Southampton one is like this I think I will give it a miss and head out on a club run.It took up my entire day for 55 miles of riding, and was all Jaguar marketing. I would.
What was more amazing was the distance some had travelled to get there.
I thought to myself yesterday I am either a better rider than I give myself credit for, or Jaguar chose some ste riders to attend. There were around 6 of us out of 50 who maybe should have been in our own group, but most of the ride was spent waiting for everyone else.

The Luton one was quite different.
No marketing at all - a quick briefing which basically went along the lines of "you're all adults, get on with it". Followed all 30 or so people setting off together through the town centre. Pace was brisk right from the off and my gf wasn't feeling great so we dropped back a bit. The car stayed with us for a few miles before I ushered him onwards and said we'd look after ourselves.
The car had one hybrid bike on the roof, and some drinks/cereal bars.
Looking at Strava, most went around in 19-20mph average. We did 15.5. Nobody stopped.

That sounds more like it.
Our lot were split into 3 groups, slow, middle and fast. The fast group went first, the slow group last. The car apparently followed the slow group, but most of us never saw it.
The fast group and middle group probably travelled at the same speed as they were only ever around 15 mins behind us whenever we stopped.
A few of us tried to pull the group along a little quicker, but, gaps quickly appeared and were not filled. Plus, on each of the three climbs of the day, the group was obliterated.

I have the route though (thanks to someone on here for posting that up ) programmed into my Garmin, so if there's any of the shenanigans that Dizeee experienced, I'm leaving them behind and going off on my own!
Who else doing the Southampton one is up for joining my secret breakaway group if all goes tits up?

You should come and join our club run from North Baddesly at 9am
Ahhh you must be with Sotonia. I was a member about a year ago but it lapsed and I didn't renew it. After deciding to give club riding another go, I've since joined the Fareham Wheelers. They ride from Wickham, which is slightly easier for me to get to.
I'd be up for a ride with you one Sunday though. Could I do so as a guest? Likewise, you're welcome to come to one of our club runs.
