Jesus, how old are you? Had my first mtb (a puch followed by a British eagle) in about 1990, even they had cantis.
I had an under-chainstay u-brake on an early MTB. Stupid design! (I'm 37).
Snap, falcon 1st mtb with bottom bracket mounted deore U brake, 38years old. Guessing that bike was around 1987/88 (it also had a girvin flexstem)

I'm sure my mate had the 1st edition of the GT tequesta and that had a U brake as well. They were stronger than the wide arch cantis, but always clogged up with mud. Or got mullered by the chain getting caught in them.

My mate had a Trek 6000 with a BB U brake. So obviously not designed for MTBing in the UK. In winter we spent half our time unclogging the damn thing with twigs. Eventually we took to taking a long flat bladed screwdriver with us to keep it clear.

My raleigh mustang SIS was really reliable until I destroyed it (ripped the frame at the head tube) crashing into a fallen tree after the 1987 storms. Edit... My memory might be wrong there - but it was somewhere in the late 80s and I was gutted. It took a few paper rounds to save up for a new one!

I have one of these GT Panteras with a U brake mount.

There is a way of modifying Magura brakes to fit onto U brake mounts but beyond that I struggled to find an adequate solution leading to the retirement of the frame.

I must get the Trek Y-frame resprayed and built up at some point. No idea what spec to build it up to yet and I've used the Rockshox J4s on another build, so need forks too.

Unlikely to get built any time soon - too many projects!

The white ones lasted only a quarter of a ride.

I remember when mbuk did an April fool, took a close up shot of a rubber soap pad with suckers, said it was a new onza octopus, made for hard rock surfaces to suck on to.

Anyone on here got something with a U brake..................... The amount of time I used to spend stopping to unclog those f@ckers of mud.
My dad still has his Saracen Trekker from the late 80s which has XT U-brakes with the rear one down on the chainstay. Also has the Shimano Biopace rings and thumbshifters.

My retrobike is a 97 GT Tequesta with the black and red "flame" paint job. I must put that back together this year, I cannibalised a few bits when I bought an LTS-DH a few years ago and tried to turn it into more of a Freeride bike but it was just so heavy! Sold it on.

My dream bike as an early teen when I was really into mountain biking was the Yellow carbon Trek Y33.

Avid MBUK subsriber - anyone remember the films too - think I still have Dirt, Getta Grip and Chainspotting on VHS! I wonder what some of those guys from that era are doing now?

I've stored bikes in odd places (hell I have 2 in the downstairs bath right now) but bikes in the loft - that's not right, in less your loft has an external stair case you can ride down?

Steve Peat still rides.
As does Martyn Ashton. He's still very active
Karl Hemsey still did a couple of years ago...I had a good ride with him.

Not too sure about any of the others

I met up with Jez Avery this summer, he now does acrobatic moto x shows, my mate hired him as a side show to his monster trucks gig

Not as active now as he'd like to be unfortunately...
Hope he gets better but last I heard it wasn't looking good. Have seen many of his shows and of course the vids. Fantastic rider - wishing you all the best Martyn, you've inspired a generation of riders!
