I have two pairs of Mavic Kysrium Elites, both from around 2005. One pair is in excellent order, the other has worn-out rims, but the hubs, bearings, freewheel and spokes all seem to be in fine fettle.

I hate the idea of throwing them out, and I quite like the idea of building a pair of wheels myself, so I thought about rebuilding them, but replacement rims look to be around £70 apiece, and I'd need to buy a truing stand which would cost another £70-odd - so it's hardly a bargain option.

Waste of time? Better way of making good use of them?

So £210 (2x rims + stand)? Not worth it: that'll buy you a new set!

Keep 'em as a source of spares (assuming they're all compatible); spokes, bearing etc...

I'd keep the components for spares as there is no way of knowing if Mavic have changed the rim depth in the last 9 years, so if the intention was to re-use the original spokes there is a bit of a risk, albeit quite low.

That said, if the spokes can be re-used, having bought the truing stand, you will be able to save loads on future wheel repairs and build your own wheels for ever more...

There does seem to be a black art to it, with umpteen spoke lengths available so no guarantee that the newer rims would marry-up.

A pair of Shimano R501s would give me new winter wheels for £80 all-in...
