How is your 2014 mileage so far?
Discussion
Distance: 3747 miles
Time: 226 hrs 4 mins
Elev gain: 72,359ft
Rides: 461! (This stat is distorted by the fact that my 22 mile a day commute is 2 separate rides each way, with a train journey in the middle.)
Biggest ride: 104 miles
Biggest climb: 2283ft
It's a shame that the top speed isn't displayed in stats, but I guess they want to avoid any competitive element, which could then result in injury/death etc.
(For the record, mine is 49.9mph in Mallorca on a hired Wilier GTR!)

Cracked the 1000 mile mark on the MTB today, which I am pretty pleased with. Not bad for a fat man on a heavy bike There are also rides I stopped recording in a huff after mechanical issues/punctures so its probably more like 1100 miles.

Mine also is 49.9 on the decent of Mt Teide(For the record, mine is 49.9mph in Mallorca on a hired Wilier GTR!)
It's the average speeds over some of the downhill segments (none of which are straight) that are really insane
40.4mph average over 2.5 miles
33.0mph average over 12.8 miles
Ears were ringing with the wind noise
Hit my 7000 miles for the year already, and I'm having the snip on Saturday so I am done now until Jan. Till then it's going to be random short trips only with no real intent. Had a fantastic year - can't see me topping it for years to come as wife back to work in Feb and no time to ride will ensue until their older
2,640 miles of mainly commuting. I'm on track for doubling last years mileage.
A happy side effect of this is that in the YTD I've managed to cycle in at least 75% of the days I've been in the office. Even based on a yearly travel card which is the leas man maths freindly way of justifying anything my CX commuter I bought in Aug has been paid for.

Just tipped 11,000 miles...........
Chapeau. Following you on Strava it looks like you're riding almost every day, and chunky distances too. I remember you mentioned it's been an usual year without a new contract so I'm assuming this annual mileage is a step up for you too? What was 2013's mileage like and what impact do you think 2014's mileage has had on your performance?I have to admit it has been a bit of an unusual year for me, last year I managed 8,750 miles which took quite some dedication as I spent 9 months of last year in hotels away from home without my bike. As much as I have enjoyed the riding this year, the current lack of contract is becoming a bit worrying - I have blown a hole in savings and will need to plug it once I manage to get myself back in the hamster wheel - otherwise I can't afford more bike bits!!
In terms of fitness I felt at my best mid-summer, I turned 42 in November and personally feel as fit as I did in my mid-20's, and much fitter than I was in my 30's (and 2 stone lighter). In terms of cycling fitness I have plateaued a bit, mainly because I am not working towards a specific goal now other than trying to hit 12k miles for the year. That said my overall stamina and ability to climb has increased significantly in comparison with last year. I don't need to prep for 100+ mile rides anymore, if it looks like a nice day and the job sites are slow then I jump on the bike and can put in 100 miles without the need to 'carb up' the night before, a decent breakfast and a couple of cereal bars will get me through the day.
Tyres, chains and chamois creme have probably been my biggest expenses this year (excluding one off upgrades like wheels etc). Tyres have varied vast amounts, my faves are still Vredestein's as they seem to suit my weight and riding style - the new Senso tyres are a fantastic ride, but are not as durable as the old Fortezza's. I have found that the Senso's are very susceptible to cutting and had to throw one away with less than 500 miles due to numerous cuts in the centre of the tyre that went through the inner casing. Thinking back over the year I have replaced all of my tyres through damage rather than wear - I guess that speaks volumes about the state of our roads!
Chains vary vastly depending on the make/model - the lightweight chains are much less durable, I had a KMC X-11SL that lasted less than 1,000 miles before it was at 120% stretch whereas I had an Ultegra on my winter bike that lasted several K miles before it needed replacing. I tend to replace the chains at 100% stretch as they are much cheaper than replacing cassette's and chainrings, but this can vary from 1.2k miles to 4k!
Overall I have enjoyed the year, from riding up the Rock of Gibraltar to the rides through Surrey Hills and the Chilterns where the freezing rain has been running off my nose and I have been thinking 'wtf am I doing this?"
My legs always feel bruised, there are times when I look at my bike in utter contempt, there are always riders out there who are younger/fitter/faster than me, but I love riding and hope I will never fall out of love with it - I am also secretly hoping that one day I will get good at it!!!
I fully intend to be one of the old guy's you see when you are out on your Sunday morning ride wobbling along in the other direction with the knowing wry smile on his face!
