I don't know whether you made a typo but we're on about 100miles, so 160km!
Regardless 100km with 6000ft must have a been a decent ol' ride.
Ye I know you are but don't steel my moment and no it wasn't a typo. Hopefully by the end of the summer it will be 100 miles not kilometres Regardless 100km with 6000ft must have a been a decent ol' ride.

If you can keep a decent pace up for 60miles and 6000ft then I expect a flat 100miler isn't out of the question?
I did my first century 2 weeks ago as part of the Cotswolds Spring Classic Sportive.
Today I've beaten that already! I did the Somerset Gran Fondo 200K, so 124 miles with 7500 ft of climbing and a particularly nasty 1:4 1 mile long climb. I managed to ride it all, no getting off and walking despite some of the inclines. Not a great average speed though, but still chuffed.

The metric century is a good achievement, set a goal of 100kms then 100 miles, then 200kms, then 200 miles and so on.
For now I think I'll stick with the 100miles and try to get my time down OR add some hills. Whilst I like the idea of doing 125miles+ I don't really want to spend that much time in the saddle on my todd! 5.5hrs was long enough!! russy01 said:

Afraid so. Seemed like a good turn out. Good weather for it too. I got the nutrition thing all very wrong this time and suffered from a thudding headache from mile 40 right through to the end.thenortherner said:

Well done chap!
You certainly eat a lot, I had 7 gels and a bar overall I think. Plus I was the same and didn't drink much - I think that's the gels?
How long did it take in the end?
Cheers, took us 5 hrs 17 mins in the end. You certainly eat a lot, I had 7 gels and a bar overall I think. Plus I was the same and didn't drink much - I think that's the gels?

It was starting to become a psychological barrier as I have been putting it off for so long due to not being able to factor in enough time to do it.
I knew you wouldn't be far away.
That's just it - I did, and being on the front is like being on your own which excelled the boredom somewhat - no visual impact of a group.
That's not to say I was leading the way - it was a full on team effort, ish as a couple were fading at the end, but it did work nicely today between the three of us up front. There is no way I could have gone out on my own and done the sort of pace we achieved for the the time. I'm happy.
The guy I rode with today does the same, training for Le Jog. I don't know why as he is silly fit. He swims at Virginia Water Lake at 6am then does a 5 hour ride for fun.
He did a 215 mile ride last year to IOW and back with one other, averaging just under 19. For fun.
What's really annoying is that he is so quiet and annoyingly humble. But, he works long hours all week, then spends his entire weekends on the saddle. No girlfriend, no close family and no other stimulus as far as I know.
But that's better than the guy we have who just drafts, then sprints up hills, and then drafts again.

Good effort russ! I am in training to the Fred Whittington next year - hard training on a mtb for a road race though!
Doing my first 100 is a while off yet

Good luck. It's a tough day out but you've more than enough time. Don't discount riding mountain bikes - x hours hard effort is x hours hard effort, whatever the type of bike. Main difference is gearing - mountain bikes will get you up ridiculous inclines but unless you're planning on using a triple (which isn't a bad thing) you need to get used to grinding up 30% grades.
I'm doing 'The Fred' next weekend for my third time. Not as well prepped as last year but hoping to enjoy a more sedate pace compared with last year's wet/windy grind!
If it's boring, then you're not working hard enough. Get to the front, initiate a chain gang, dick about about sprinting for hills/signs, up the pace etc, etc.

If they're being a dick (i.e. not doing any of the work), then spit them out the back between hills. They'll soon get the hint!Question, does it still count as a century ride if you stop at say a cafe for some food? I want to push myself now to complete 100 miles but thats probably around 4000 calories used to do so. I know my body would suffer from this no matter how many orios and flapjack I have. Could I do say 50/60 miles, have a break then the other half an it still count as one ride?

81 miles A DAY, for a year. No energy gels or carbon fibre back then
