Hmm, as a rider that rode sub 4 hours, I don't disagree however I would add that (for a 'normal' person) it would take several years of sustained training to achieve a 25mph average.

I'm sure you'd agree - it's a case of diminishing returns when pushing upwards of 20mph. It's taken me 3 years to be able to dabble with a 20mph average over any meaningful distance!
Thing is, the average speed is a headline figure that means almost not a vast amount because its all about group size etc. Hence some people who would struggle to average 20mph round that route are able to go 5 mph faster.

Yes, it would take some effort, but its not beyond most people, the key is riding the bunch well, I haven't bothered looking at numbers, but I'm sure some people surfed round in bunches with around 200w for 3-4 hours which is doable by most people with a bit of training.

And yes, it does take time solo, but that is not what we're saying here, if you can ride on your own on a tough route at 18.5-19mph, then certainly 23/24mph in a group would be well within grasp.

I keep applying and not getting a ride so I can only speak for the people I know through racing that were right up there near the front.

Over these sort of distances how much would a bike effect your time if soloing? For example my 4 year old 105 equipped 10.25kg bike versus top of the range aero carbon 6.8kg d2i....

On my 29lb zelos my 10k route took me 29 mins and that was my best time. Switching to an 18lb Ribble took the time diwn to 23 mins for the same route and I was unfitter as well.

Square root of not-a-lot on a fairly flat course. Hard to do a true back to back comparison, things like winds have larger effect solo.

Some context, I bought a road bike in August 2012 have done about 4000k in total on it and went round in 4hrs 26 on Sunday.

I personally don't think that's to bad really, if I could fit in more training, or should that be structured training then I could probably improve, have we got a thread for training advice? Perhaps some rollers for winter may be a good idea!
