Am quite new to cycling (in fact still riding the old clunker MTB), how competitive are these events - one to dodge for a newbie who's only done a 30 miler up to now?

its timed but its not a race, there are people of all abilities who ride them and a variety of routes form 40 to 80 miles on offer, you can even choose the route on the day dependent upon how you feel and what the weather is doing. This gathering is far more a social than anything else, I hope.... wink its good route, undulating but only one hill of note

Ah cheers!

It is quite tempting, will have to squeeze a few longer routes to see if I can manage that before signing up!

If you can do 30miles, you'll definitely be able to do whatever this course throws at you. I too used to think of building up to bigger routes, but the reality is if you're with many other people, and you have that base fitness, then you can do it smile

It's surprising how much you can up the distances. When I started in May I was doing 20-30km rides. In June I bumped it to 50-60kms. July went up to 100-130km and my August best is 200km. After each new distance I'm finding I'm less achy than my previous one so I don't think the increases are too rapid. The body is much more capable than the mind gives it credit for wink

The key thing I've found is to fuel well, keep hydrated (including electrolytes) and to be disciplined about your recovery.

I'm at 30 miles/48 kms now but my only restriction to go further than that without stopping are pins and needles down my right leg leading to a numb foot. Starts at about 20 miles/32kms-ish then I have to stop and wait. Anyone recommend a bike fitting in and around West Berkshire?

I'm booked onto this one but there's a good chance I'll be off the coast of Scotland on that day.
However, I'm planning for success and, all being well, I'll be there.

Sorry to be a misery-guts, but I'm not likely to have a replacement road bike by then, so it looks like I'm going to have to say "aaahm oot!"

I'll be there in my newly-acquired PH jersey, but I'm booked onto the short route as it's my mate's first ever sportive (I've bullied him into it) and I'll be shepherding him round.

I'll come and say hello if I see you lot though!

I'm going to try and persuade a buddy to join for the short route too. Only I'm not nice enough to ride it with him.

Well the calendar in the kitchen is clear on that day and there was no audible protestations at the mention of this Sportive apart from, "aren't you doing something else in October"?

I explained that the Box Hill sportive was first week so I could be in, just need to decided on if to drive up early or carb load the night before in the Travel Lodge!

Will be doing the longer of the two routes.

Not meant as a hijack but as someone sounded disappointed about not being able to do a lap... I thought I'd mention that Evans are running a sportive from Mallory Park in November that includes the track.

Might be of interest.
