That is me told, I thought the thin stays would take some of the harshness out, admittedly they are dead straight rather than curved but apposed to a meaty thick wedge like on the TM.
I know what you mean, they do look like they should not be stiff. But somehow they are!

My mate has one – Although the Ultegra 6800 version which comes with DT Swiss Wheels (also from Evans), he haggled a fair bit and got quite a bit knocked off I think (worth a try).

Anyways, he "seems" to have got a fair bit quicker (particularly on the flats and descents). Bigger front ring (he was compact previously), aero benefit (he comes from an SLc01) or new bike placebo effect; does it matter?. If its shiny and looks (is) fast you should buy it (never on finance though, it’s PH don’t you know). Buy it in black though, there’s a few more years left for stealthy looking bikes and you don’t want to look like you bought last year’s colourway, re-polished turd, 100 modulus less carbon etc etc etc.

Outside a wind tunnel, new bike / technology benefit appears to be subjective and anecdotal at best. I ride an aero bike / set-up (I’m paranoid about aero to make up for power deficiency); and you'd struggle to split us on the flat now (we both have a very similar engine - FTP around 240w, weight for both around 71kgs). Annoyingly I spent > x3 on mine - so he appears to have got something of a performance bargain (and it looks like a frikkin spaceship to boot).

At the end of the day, if you’re other-half can spend more on a handbag / shoe combination; and it makes you happy then buy it.

They look great in guru blue.

There isn't much on the net about the N2A. Its well known how good the Pro Carbon is and PX shift loads, but I get the impression that they don't shift many of the N2As because they are priced at a point where there is a lot of stiff competition from the usual suspects such as Spesh, Giant, Trek ect ect. I think the N2A was better value when I was £1799.

Planet-X have just launched the Nanolight, which is also worth a look. However, I don't think it looks as cool as the N2A.

I'd investigate the BMC Team Machine SLR, its somewhere between the sportive-friendly Gran Fondo and the TMR, supposed to be light, stiff and still forgiving. Good review in this months Cyclist, I'd investigate it for sure..... then buy the R3.

I've got a 2014 Team Machine SLR02. I love it... Comfortable to ride all day and compliant over the bumps and less than perfect road conditions. But massively agile and direct when it needs to be - for me a great compromise rather than going all out and living with a Time Machine.

Although having put some carbon clinchers on it recently, I've certainly noticed an increase in harshness over the stock Shimano wheels.

The only thing that I've found is I can't seem to get the Ultegra chainset running as quietly as I would like. Seems to be lots of noise from the rear cassette as the chain leaves the rear sprocket. Maybe its just the state-of-the-art with an 11 speed block. But to me, at least, its noisy...

Thanks for all the thoughts. TeamMachine would be a lovely bike but I rather have my heart set on aero. I am a rider of larger stature, shall we say, and aero is going to make more of a difference to the riding that I do than weight is.

I'm test-riding the TMR02 on Friday, and a 2013 Scott Foil 40 on Friday. I'm intrigued by the Scott - they do a build which is £9k on a frame which is the same design and only 200g lighter! This, in my head, means the el cheapo build must be worth a look.

Decision time on Monday then.

There's a few of us on here that have Foils (there's a thread somewhere) - mines done a good few thousand miles now, some sportives, audax and most recently ironman so its pretty adaptable.

So, my weekend.

Tested the TMR.

Positives: FAST, not as uncomfortable as I'd feared, fast, fairly chuckable, did I mention fast? I took my Garmin on the test-ride, just to see the speed difference from the Cannondale over a similar piece of road, and accidentally got a P2/550 on a Strava segment!
Negatives: Wheels, saddle, bar-tape and bars would all need to be changed. Bars were the sort which end 3/4 of the way around their radius, and I don't get on with them as I normally lean on the flat bit of the drops.

Didn't test the Scott. Weather was biblical and, as I wouldn't want someone test-riding my bike in a monsoon, I thought I'd give the seller a break, so binned it off. I've told him that I'll come back to him on Saturday if I haven't bought something else in the meantime.

Then I found a 2011 Cervelo S2 in budget with Mavic Kyrsyium Elites and full 7800 Dura Ace. Heart has to rule head, and if he provides me with proof of ownership and it's not riddled with cracks, I'm going to end up buying that when I view it on Tuesday. If either of those things are amiss, then I'll probably end up buying the BMC.

Question to the masses - I've got a full 105 groupset (5800, 11 speed) in the post which should arrive next week (pre-ordered in April with the intent of upgrading the CAAD). Would it make sense to swap out the 7800 group for 5800, gain another rear sprocket, probably make my money back selling the 7800 and actually be able to afford to maintain it? Or is this sacrilege and I should keep the 7800 and cancel the 5800 order?

7800 probably one of the best mechanical groupsets Shimano have made. 11 speed is a gimmick anyway.

Personally I'd just stick with the 7800 and upgrade replace as time goes by.

Keep the Dura-Ace on the S2, keep the 105, keep the CAAD. Buy a 'winter' frame for the 5800 group, and use it when it's nasty outside to save the Cervelo for best wink

Buy the S2, it will really ps off Edd! smile You will love it, they handle better than anything else I've ever ridden, the 3T fork is sublime and the way it holds the front wheel on the same line through a corner makes you laugh at first. Keep the DA too and ignore the "10sp is dead" doom-mongers...

I know, I genuinely did check that he wouldn't throw a hissy fit about it!

He was, in fairness, surprisingly calm, which I would imagine means he's now got an S5 on order.

Can't argue with that - ta. I was concerned that they only made up to a 11-23 or something silly, but it would appear you can get an 11-27 so I won't have to get taxis up everything.

You can run any shimano cassette with 7800 as long as its 10 speed. I tend to buy ultegra as half the cost.

I have a flat in Clifton to buy first... then I'll get an S5 sometime around 2050...

But someone on the other thread said it was 'yesterday's technology' wink
