Imo this sort of st is what makes car drivers seriously dislike cyclists - lycra clad middle aged tossers on 5000 quid plus bikes willy waving about their 5k time trial times attained on public roads.
and then theres the Sunday morning peleton 5 abreast down a country road thinking theres nothing wrong with holding up every other road user and getting abusive when someone dares to drive past them.
Been riding bikes for over 30 years and over the last 10 years the level of tttery in road cyclists has gone through the roof - strangely not in the mtb side of the sport.

I don't know about your running club, but in mine using a bicycle for a 5K or Half Marathon would be considered cheating.and then theres the Sunday morning peleton 5 abreast down a country road thinking theres nothing wrong with holding up every other road user and getting abusive when someone dares to drive past them.

Nice sweeping generalisation there. I was talking to a walker the other day, they said they think all MTB riders are s...and then theres the Sunday morning peleton 5 abreast down a country road thinking theres nothing wrong with holding up every other road user and getting abusive when someone dares to drive past them.

Because time trials on the road really is a danger to the public!and then theres the Sunday morning peleton 5 abreast down a country road thinking theres nothing wrong with holding up every other road user and getting abusive when someone dares to drive past them.
I've yet to see a Sunday morning club ride when they've been 5 abreast. I think you are chatting st.

... And the only person who quoted their time isn't a cyclist. Talk about looking for any opportunity to reinforce a stereotype, no matter how invalid!I've just started cycling again (after 10 years of not cycling) and I feel quite vulnerable on the roads. I understand the drivers perception of cyclists, and have myself, as a driver, been outraged (quietly outraged) by the behaviours of some cyclists, but no more often than I am with the behaviours of some car drivers, some motorcyclists, some lorry drivers...etc.
But cyclists seem to get it more than others. I will avoid main roads were I can, and in the places I cant I'd rather not cycling on the road - i'll trundle along carefully on the pavement or I'll just get off and push until I reach a place to resume cycling safely (a quiet road, or the park).

twice on one ride I had to take avoiding action when other road users were overtaking and driving towards me! One of them was an truck overtaking a tractor and trailer!
This seems to be increasingly prevalent. The number of times I've been in the car and driven / cycled / ridden at on my side of the road. When it's a car / van they're often so concerned with giving a cyclist a wide birth that they don't realise they're 50% plus on the wrong side of the road and driving into oncoming traffic, seemingly oblivious to the other option which is.... wait behind the cyclist until there's enough space to complete a sage overtake.
Also a common tactic amongst bikers (and cyclist) who's definition of "filtering" is actually overtaking queueing traffic on the wrong side of the road forcing drivers to emergency stop so they don't hit said bike head on.
I've been cycle-commuting for around 21 years now, and the number of aggressive, ignorant idiots on the roads definitely seems to be increasing, not to mention the sheer volume of traffic which has meant more and more roads being essentialy unsafe for cycling.
The level of anti-cycling sentiment among the general public also hasn't decreased in that time, while the level of car-dependency has increased.
I can see a day when cyclists are essentially forced off the entire road network, no doubt to much celebration from the morass of self-centered 'you don't pay road tax' drivers.
It's sad and pathetic. Britain will continue to ape America, swamped with cars, totally depdendent on them, full of obese, unhealthy people, pollution, traffic noise and congestion, road rage, deaths and injuries, while the basic freedom of cyclists to use the roads is lost with barely an objection registered.
I just hope I am able to emigrate again before cycling becomes impossible.

Melodramatic, much?
Not much. It's been happening gradually during the 35-odd years I've been cycling. Many of the roads I used to be able to cycle on have become too dangerous to risk using now.
Apart from the massive growth in traffic volumes, driver attitudes and behaviours have deteriorated both generally and more specifically towards cyclists. There is more speeding and cars pass closer to cyclists thna used to be the case, on average.
Nothing changes for the better for cyclists in the UK, things just keep on getting worse.
