Funny you should say that as one of the bolts was missing....
Ah. That'll do it.
Locktite.

Or just check them. You don't want to make them impossible to remove in the future.

Will come off again with locktite. Just stops them working loose.

If you belong to a gym? Practice getting in and out on the spin bikes (at my local gym the watt bikes and spin bikes have toe clips on one side and SPD on the other)
You can't fall off of an exercise bike.
or
Your bike on a turbo trainer.
^this^

My mate was moving to a rode bike and had never used spd's. as part of his whole bike solution he picked up a turbo trainer so he could do winter training indoors.

When we went out on a ride he was a lot more comfortable with getting in and out his SPD's.

Plus I'd hate to be picking him up out the road due to the dreaded SPD newbie "topple" smile

Seriously, practice it on grass if you haven't got access to a Turbo trainer. smile

Thanks for all the advice. I had managed fine until my foot got stuck in one of the pedals. When the pedal and my shoe were finally 'snapped' apart at home, there was a bolt from one of the cleats missing. I am no bike mechanic/expert type but I imagine this missing bolt was something to do with the shoe getting stuck and me therefore toppling over.

I use this on my bolts: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&amp...

Supposed to be for models, but seems to work!

Absolutely, cleats need to be really very tightly done up on the shoes if even slightly too loose you won't be able to unclip.

I suppose it had to happen eventually - I came off today! Having just finished a 40k ride I was at the lights on Chelsea Bridge, minutes from home when my shoe got completely stuck in the pedal. Over I went, writhing around like an upturned beetle whilst cars honked and my brother laughed.punch
A couple of guys came to help but I just couldn't get up as my shoe would not come away from the pedal. Have had to buy new pedals AND shoes as the only way to detach them was by wrenching the shoe away causing damage to everything. Handle bars also got twisted and thumb nail damaged.yikes
Welcome....

I might take a winding route from Woking down to Petersfield area and back on Sunday morning if anyone fancies it.

I'll be on my 1200GSA

Brilliant smile

I once got some Look Delta cleats by mistake instead of Keo's.
Couldn't work out why I couldn't clip in
Not isolated incidences. Particularly once you've got a shedful of different cleats. I'm sure the manufacturers do it on purpose.

NOTHING, however, beats my old Onza pedals with elastomers that were so temperature sensitive that clipping force varied not only between rides but even within rides!

Is it advisable or not, to put a little grease on the cleats to enable easier clipping in and out?

To enable easier clipping in and out you slacken off the tension on the pedals.
