Why do you guys change your wheels for winter riding? what's going to happen to them?

That depends on what wheels you're hanging on the wall, personally my Zipp 303 carbon tubs would be bin fodder after an english winters riding. But my winter wheels are still a decent set in the grand scheme, but alu

I've commuted on an old early-80s Colnago super for about 10 years. Almost never wash it during the winter and have had no issues with pitting chrome. I also confess to using race blade guards (quite successfully, I might add). For what its worth...
Yeah - I was using it as an example, but I actually have no idea if Colnago lacquer their chrome or provide any other sort of protection form the factory.

Mine was from an English frame maker and had no protection whatsoever over the chrome. That and the components that I mentioned with chrome bits didn't like the salt/rain much! Campag and Zeus certainly didn't have any protection from our winter - I can say that with complete certainty! smile

Between that and classic cars down the years, I've spent a lot of time and money on polishing! Thanks heavens for carbon being the trend! (Although I still like my chrome anyway...)

I use SKS Race Blade Longs on my winter bike as these are clip on's and are a great product. I do however use the front part of the rear mudguard from an old set of Crud Road Racer 2's as this gives almost complete proection for the front mech. The SKS Race Blade's front part of the rear mudguard is useless and your heels and feet get covered with crud and water.

With regard to wheels I use an old set of Fulcrum Racing 3's and just have a hub service when needed. My carbon bike has a set of Campagnolo Shamal Ultra Darks on it and I wouldn't want to wreck them riding throughout the winter.

I use this quite a bit of the time anyway, the Venge is great but I can go on gravel trails and longer rides in more comfort. Actually contemplated getting rid of the other bike but 10 days in Tenerife on it and I was hooked again. That's why I like the pair of them. This one was a fleabay build and without the PT Cosmic owes me around £650. Fulcrum 5 or 7's are the norm, tough as old boots. I have used 28c 4 seasons all year, they've been brilliant, can just squeeze them on the Venge but they can trap small stones on the caliper, not good. It's a really soft frame, the Venge is harsh much harder work when you aren't in the mood. They make a massive difference to the ride on both bikes...the Venge now has 25c

Hopefully soon have a mtb which will be out over the worst of the weather. I never bother in ice anyway for me that's a morning on the turbo smile
