I have noticed during my rides that I find myself sitting well forward on my saddle and keep consciously pushing myself backward onto the main bit.

Is this a symptom of my saddle/crank position being too far apart. I wondered if I was getting better pedalling efficiency further forward and more over the crank centre so subconsciously edging forward as I ride.

I'm guessing bike fit may come into any replies but wondered if there is an explanation

Bars to saddle nose too far away from each other. Try and shorten the stem and move the saddle to adjust it

Rather than being too short, I would suggest your stem is too low hence you are perched on the nose. If your stem was too short you would naturally stretch your arms rather than position yourself too far forwards.

Saddle level. I have done the thing with the plumb bob hung from the front edge of my knee to make sure it sits over the centre of my pedal which if I move my saddle forward it will move my knee forward of the centre line of the pedal

I would say your saddle is too far back from my experience. The plumb bob should be from the back of your patella to the centre of the pedal.

I'd put a bit of tape round the saddle rail so you have a datum point them move it 5mm forwards and see how it feels.

I *thought* my saddle was too far forwards when I first tried setting my bike up but I was wrong. I was instinctively trying to get my sit bones on the wider part of the seat but I misinterpreted that as needing more room paperbag

Saddle is maybe the wrong size or shape for your anatomy, and/or is pointing downwards a bit, and/or you have too much saddle to bar distance or drop.

If you find the saddle needs to be jammed right forward on the seatpost, you may need to get a shorter stem and push the saddle back, as you also need to ensure that your weight is mainly carried on your bum, not your hands.

In my experience, £50 for a bike fit from a decent shop is very worthwhile.
