Who's got a fatbike?
Discussion
Winter coming, rain setting in - our local routes will soon be slippy rocks and roots and boggy fields.
Been eyeing up an on-one fatty for a while but kept putting it off for various reasons, had a quick play on a friend of a friends a few weeks back. Didn't hate it, quite liked it but was not a long enough ride to get a decent opinion, no local shops have a demo bike.
Shall I pluck up the courage and get it ordered or slog out another winter on the Orange with lots of pushing through fields?!

I bought an On-One Fatty last year, planned on using it as the winter bike.
The best way I could describe it would be 'a bit sht'
I'm sure that if you spunk a old of money on something fancy like a carbon Beargrease it's a bit more enjoyable but once the novelty wore off the Fatty was just a bit crap.
They don't climb very well, unsurprisingly, it wasn't particularly good on singletrack and descents weren't much better. I'm sure that some people who've bought them love them and think they're great but I sold mine after a couple of months and wouldn't bother getting one again.

Been reading about this guy who tours on one:

It looks rather exhausting to me although I suppose it makes some sense riding on sand but I'd just find a different route.

The point of Cass' trip was to do as much off road as possible between Alaska and Ushuaia and ride in places you'd struggle on anything else, like the soft sand of the Lagunas Route from San Pedro de Atacama to Uyuni. My Condor on 700 x 40c was unrideable in comparison.http://whileoutriding.com

I think they're great for touring off the beaten track and am quite tempted to get on once my current trip's over.
I know that was the point of his trip - I (badly) tried to explain how the whole thing looks so difficult in concept that I couldn't even consider it. I'd much rather try what you have.
I have to say that some of them on Google images look fantastic. But then, the bike I wanted most in the whole world was a Raleigh Bomber (some 35 years ago) and that proved to be a hopeless bike.

They're great for their intended purpose of cycling on sand, snow and where no-one's ridden before but are a bit pony on the road and you do frequently have to inflate / deflate the tyres according to what surface you're riding on. I can see how they'd be good for bikepacking / travelling slowly as opposed to a quick blast in the woods.
I bought one a year ago and I ride it every day. 6am me and my dog do 4or 5 miles in every weather and I absolutely love it. It's the only triple (chainset) I have seen, and on the days I take it to the coast for a play on the beach (40 miles return) it is no slower than the mountain bike it replaced.
I average 12-14mph when the tyres are at 40psi which I do for a longer trip, I then drop it to 12-15psi for ambling around, or for wet, muddy or sandy conditions.
I have 6 road bikes which All get lots of use but this is by far the most fun. The only thing to bear in mind is that they are only slow because everyone wants to stop you to ask what it is as they are still quite rare.
I have changed quite a few parts since (including the tyres) and added 2 super bright Chinese Cree T6 headlamps.
I have never taken it on the road.
Get one, they are fabulous !!

Just what I didn't need to read... I'm already very tempted and you may have made me press the button. I average 12-14mph when the tyres are at 40psi which I do for a longer trip, I then drop it to 12-15psi for ambling around, or for wet, muddy or sandy conditions.

I have a Salsa Carbon Beargrease
set up 1x10 with a 26t front ring , and a 42t largest rear & 90mm Lightbicycle rims , running 3.8 tires
Is it fast , not especially , but it is difficult to ride it without grinning like an idiot , and with a decent engine , it wouldn't be slow (sub 25lb weight helps)
the amount of traction you have is hard to get used to , and other posters are right , you don't want to ride one of these if you don't want to chat to almost everyone you meet .
One of the most social modes of transport ever , every one wants to talk & have a go
Looking forward to having a go in the snow

Those that think they are a bit slow or don't descend. This is a guy I went to Spain with in may, with his Fatty. He wasn't slow, it did climb and although it shouldn't work in my eyes, went bloody well.
