would like something for weekend rides, mountain biking background, not fussy on brand, but would prefer a decent frame and quite happy with last year's model.

£1k is tops, happy to save a few quid.

I have just passed 1,000 miles on mine & it still makes me smile .

If you have 10 minutes to join british cycling at a cost of £20.00 you qualify instantly for another 10% discount so you could get this bike for around £820.00.

I was chatting to the young lad at the Wimbledon Halfords branch & he was saying the new ' Halfords-13 bikes' are really special but only certain stores have them.

Plenty discounted Cannondale, Giant Defy Composite, Merckx, Cube etc:

I'd go for a Supersix or GTC Pro as I like a less upright position

This Synapse Disc Ultegra is good too:

5 11, relatively long legs, so when buying mountain bikes tend to err on the smaller frame size.

Probably a size 54 then for a Sportive orientated design with a shorter top tube like the Synapse rather than long and low to stretch you out for racing, like a Supersix.

It would be good to try some for size - Evans Cycles price match FYI..

At 5'11" I'd definitely be looking at a 56, just put my son on a 54 he's 5'4", it's got growing room for him but not 7" of.

I have recently had a less than impressive customer service experience with Plant X, which is a pity, because the pro-carbon is a good frame, and all the drivetrain is good spec, and I am ultimately happy with the bike.

in fairness i'm asking for ideas, there are some good deals around and this thread has highlighted them for me. Cube being one.

I've bought several mountain bikes in the last few years with no need for such a question, as that is my field.

not really fussed by your humour but perhaps save it for the ladies eh?

Similar back ground to me then, I'd suggest going and trying as many as you can as getting the right size is key. A decent shop will spend time with you making sure whatever you buy fits properly, something you wont get buying online.

Leisure Lakes looked after me and like I said earlier they have some good offers on 2014 bikes at the moment.

Not being rude, Dave, but this being the case, you'll surely understand the point.

An entirely non descriptive thread title, followed by a monetary value isn't exactly helpful.

If someone came to you as someone who knows a bit about the MTB market and said "I want an MTB for a grand" your first response would be "what type of riding do you want it for?"

Same with road bikes.

Believe me, I went from MTB to road and it's taken me 3 years to understand what the hell is going on re group sets, pedals etc. so I do understand why you'd want some guidance!
