Just a quick question for Strava experts.
I compared a ride with a friend and on the effort comparison it gives a current speed for that part of the segment. My speed is a couple of miles an hour quicker yet it shows me as behind all the way.
How is this possible?

Because Strava is horribly inaccurate - it's especially appalling off-road - I've stone cold beaten my mates on sections - given them a 90 second headstart and finished on their back wheel and started with them behind me and had time to jump off my bike an hastily put a smug look on before they arrive and Strava will usually tell me I'm slower.

Apparently I'm 9th fastest around my local cycle Speedway track, I've only ever ridden next to it, but I think because of the innaccuracies of GPS, especially on phones, the app has to interpolate and align where you've been to segments that is thinks you've ridden.

Can anyone shed any light on this discrepancy that I noticed this weekend? I don't analyse Strava as much these days, but I looked at this on the weekend as we tackled a little climb as a group and I noticed the chap I rode up with got a 3rd overall whereas I didn't.

On inspecting my data I saw that Strava had recorded my time as the same as his, however, the time was ignored, and my previois best time which was 14 seconds slower remains as my best time, although it isn't.

This is what I see my end - and I have tried the refresh data tool on the ride too but nothing happens.

Inaccurate you say? Well I knocked this off in 20 minutes. Apparently.

is your ride marked as private or have you ticked the "hide from leader boards" option?
Is your quicker time there if you go to the "My Results" section for the segment?

Wsa that on the Bike or swimming?
I find Strava inaccurate on recording swims too - the elevation and total climb stats are miles out! smile

No nothing is hidden or marked as private.

Going to any of the my results menu's including overall leaderboards just shows the slower time. The same ride has other cups and PR's so it is an inconsistent error too.

Dizeee - have you tried (on pc)
clicking on the 'Spanner' (left side of screen near the edit button)
Gives list of options.
Click on bottom one 'Refresh Activity Achievements'

Was the ride recorded on phone or Garmin ? As I ran both for a while and they had different results ,apparently if you run Garmin you can use different satellites not checked this out .

This is my understanding, I am happy to be corrected if anyone can shed any light on this:

At any time your GPS positional accuracy could be 10ft or 100ft depending on all sorts of factors, it's not too much of a problem if you are moving quickly (airplane, car etc) but becomes an issue the slower you move. It is a real problem when running for instance so that GPS watches for running have to use all sorts of maths to try to give you a speed that is somewhere near correct.

The data in a GPX file is essentially a sequence of time, position and (optionally) elevation readings, if you consider the inaccuracies that could be present in the position and elevation you can see that, depending on the algorithms used by programs such as Strava, odd speeds and also gradients can appear. Fortunately time by GPS should be incredibly precise so you can trust that!

I think there has been some missing the point here - in my screenshot above, it has recorded the correct time, i.e 3:50, which is what myself and my friend both rode up together in side by side.

However, when I uploaded - despite the ride showing my new correct time for the segment, the new correct time does not appear in any of my overall results or overall leader boards. So despite the fact it has shown me riding it faster on this occasion, it has not recognised it and when anyone looks at the best times / leaderboards / overall best times - my previous much slower time is shown.

To try to answer just this question...

...what GPS units are you both using?

Some GPS units have a lower sample rate than others. I've seen segments where I KNOW I was faster than a friend as we were head-to-head racing on it. Yet when you hit play-back in the 'compare' feature, his icon regularly "jumps" ahead of mine as his 5 second sample rate is far less smooth than my 1 second sample rate.

It's one of Strava's limitations, along with hideous inaccuracy when, for example, using a 'cycling' GPS unit (Garmin Edge 500 in my case) to record running or hiking activities. I frequently get a time on a couple of local MTB segments when I'm riding parallel road routes to them. It winds the MTBers up no end, but hey? It's not my bloody fault!!!

Looks like a Strava error - why not email this directly to Strava and see what they say?

A mate who is a pilot told me that elevation is locked out to GPS units for security so they all just make it up. Seemed to make sense to me as when I have ridden in groups on the same ride there can be huge variables in distance climbed.

Could this be something to do with it?
