To conclude this thread after a long while. We have been living here 4 months now, and in that time I have been getting a lift to the station and mainly using a Boris from Kings Cross into the city.

However I had to be able to travel independently to the station.. So I have just this minute cycled back from the station on my new Brompton and it is a dream. 10 minute cycle, traffic free cycle paths directly to my front door. Have to say it is a seriously impressive piece of engineering, and anyone with any doubt should opt for the Brompton, the quality will last a lifetime and the residuals are rock solid.

Fortunately (it is hillier than I thought) I decided to opt for the S3L, with a C bag, and I have just stuffed it with my usual daily clutter + work wear and it all fits, the raw lacquer is also very appealing.

So Monday I can join the 'daily commute by bike thread' :-)

Thanks for the input.

Snap.

I got a S3L (with slightly reduced gearing) in raw lacquer for the same reasons as you. The lowest gear can get up nearly anything (I live in the South Downs) without breaking a sweat, and I rarely need to go faster than the top gear allows. Front bag holds all I need, including my laptop.

I do about 3 miles each way (to and from the station at both ends) and never find it a chore doing that in a suit.

Bromptons are great utility bikes.

I can't use mine for my current commute so whilst I am away during the week I use my 2 gear S as a training bike in brockwell park and surrounding roads. There's a few 'steep' sections so can get the heart rate up. They are well made but compared to my mountain bikes it's quite rickety but good fun. The steering is very twitchy and if you hit a hole in the road it will easily throw you off. It spins out at relatively low speed (circa 25 I guess). It will take on smallish junps eg on sleeping policemen without complaining. The brakes are a bit average. Fixing a puncture is quite hard work. I do love mine.
