Morning all,

I'm just in the process of ordering a new MTB, and have decided to go back to flats and learn proper technique, rather than just being able to pull up on SPDs.

I have an ageing pair of DMR V12s kicking around in the garage somewhere, but they're red (where they've not worn to white! hehe ) and the new bike is blue with black cranks, so would look truly dreadful, so I've been looking for something else.

I've seen things like DMR Vaults getting great reviews, but I don't really want to shell out another £80 on top of the price of the bike if I can help it.

The Wellgo B144 seems decent at half the price, as do the Superstar Delta Evos at £55.

Anyone got any recommendations? Ideal target would be £40 and available in blue! biggrin

I've got a set of these:

http://www.superstarcomponents.com/en/cnc-nano-tec... at 36quid. I never got on with the V12's- my feet slipped off. These they don't but they do age quickly (paint comes off) if you strike alot of trail features biggrin
Same here. Streets ahead of the V12s. So much more grip - fewer puncture wounds!

+1 for the above but I had the Carbon Cycles version of the same pedal which are a touch cheaper with free shipping:

I have DMR V8's. Find they grip very well with decent shoes!

Another vote for Superstars here, regardless of what you buy if your practising jumping after a long time on SPDs get some shin guards or get some cool scars as part of the lesson learning.

Scars are cheaper, I got the cheaper option myself :-)

Me too. Can't see the point in anything more expensive really.

+1, I run the nukeproof electrons, which are a cheaper, composite version of these. Great pedals! Certainly nicer than my old V8s.

Placky Nukes for me too. Tough, light, cheap! What's not to like ;-)

I think they'd actually melt during a nuclear attack, but I guess that wouldn't be the greatest of one's problems at that stage. Getting one's money back might be difficult...

I've got Nukeproofs with the titanium bits, as I bought them from the same shop that supplied the bike they did me a good deal on them. If memory serves I paid about £50 and normally they're about £100. Worth negotiating.

Also think about decent shoes to go with them like some 5.10s.

I'm trying to stop my self spending a fortune on some pedals with it axles at the mo!

I didn't bother asking about shoes, as I'd found dozens of differing opinions on pedals, but nobody recommending anything other than Five Ten shoes. I'd never seen anything so universally recommended, and you've just further reinforced the view.

Another vote for V8s here.

Bearings in mine lasted 6 weeks then tried a set of Mag V12s (same pedal shape but with sealed bearings) which have lasted years but the platform is fairly small and even my 5:10s never really held them well.

When I moved on to Nanos from the V12s the number of times I spiked my shins or calves halved overnight. That for me made the change worth it!

I tried those pastic Nukeproof things - utter cr4p for me. The raised axle body meant the pins were useless, and with the slightest bit of mud / water etc on my soles saw me have a few very lairy landings / mid corner slips (I am a lightweight mind).

I've done the rounds with a lot of pedals, and both my Cotic and YT are shod with a pair of NC17 Sudpin 3 pedals. They are about £55 from CRC at present, nice and slim, decent sized platform, very light, robust, super grippy and well finished. With five tens they are as grippy as vaults, but just a slightly smaller platform. I'm only size 8 shoes so not a problem for me, if I were a 10 or higher it would have to be Vaults for the platform size to give confidence.

Quite like Sombrio shoes myself, Very little in the way of branding and cheaper, if you can still get any around forty quid a pair. I think they still have some on CRC.
