Two things stand out for me...I sure look better in Lycra than I ever would in sports casual and the fact that the Royal & Ancient only admitted women very recently sums golf up.

For me, never been a choice, wouldn't ever go near a golf club, but I can see the demographic argument that middle aged £ is going on bike kit now.

I'd say well over half the regular golfers I know would struggle cycle more than five miles at a brisk pace such is their lack of fitness. Loads of golfers are properly overweight. As far as the game itself goes, sure it's incredibly difficult but you dont need to be that fit to be good golfer.

Loads of people want to be cyclists but are either too unfit or care too much what their mates will think....

Is cycling the new golf? Course it is. The fat blokes have waddled off the golf course onto their expensive pushangs. Squeezing into their overly tight Sky kits, riding their poorly set up Pinarello Dogstes. Ten a penny round here.

And a Happy New Year to you.

While the bleedin' obvious references to Lycra are very annoying in almost all general media coverage of cycling, I think it is apt to talk about it here as it does talk about the all the gear, no idea type of bloke who we are seeing all the more of in recent years.

Which IMO is absolutely fine : they buy top notch kit, the tech for which filters down to non d-a or Uletrga grouppo's over the following 2 years.
If they are out, enjoying the countryside and actually making an effort to get fit / make a difference to themselves and having fun whilst doing so i really don't see what the big issue is, nor why there is so much hate towards such people.. Would you rather they sit inside and do nothing at the detriment to their health which will probably end up costing the tax-payer at some point in time?
Me - i couldn't give a toss when people started cycling - I only started road biking 3 or so years back after MTB'ing since I was 17. I guess to some i'm not a real "roadie" becuase i've not been riding for long enough.. Its usually the same people that would look down on me because i've got a half decent bike, and enjoy wearing decent kit!

I stopped playing golf years ago due to back problems but I still cycled. Anyone want to buy a set of Titleist DCIs? smile

I had a very brief dalliance with golf last year as my Dad was getting into it heavily post-retirement. I can tell you now when your abilities are best described as poor golf is no fun at all. Whereas being rubbish at cycling is still fun, as I found this year.

The other side of it is the cost. Both golf and cycling can have pretty expensive start up costs. However, unless you want to enter events cycling is otherwise free. Or it can save me money getting to work. What's not to like?
