This should start a bun fight biggrin

If you don't listen to music, great, I respect your choice, however I love a bit of music when I'm cycling tongue out

I've always used regular Apple ear buds with budfits but as I've currently got a ruptured eardrum irked I want to change to something that doesn't sit in the ear.

I've seen the Aftershokz and they look pretty good with use of bone conduction technology they look ideal.

Has anyone used them or can recommend something else that's good for cycling?

Gotta work with a helmet (safety see smile) and be comfy enough for long rides.

I respect your choice, but I'm afraid I have no interest in your opinion wink

I just want a decent pair of headphones that allow background noise through :flicksvees: and are comfy to wear.

PS, should I stop cycling altogether as I'm currently deaf in one ear?

You should probably stop cycling all together!

In all seriousness, I would let your ear drum heal prior to using anything that could damage it. Then when fixed, just use one headphone if you insist on listening to music.

I have until it's healed, I was just making a point.

I'm at far greater risk from a puncture at 30+MPH than from listening to music when cycling, hence not wanting noise cancelling headphones. It really is no different to listening to music in the car.

I wouldn't force anyone to do it, but by the same token I also wouldn't expect anyone else to make decisions for me involving the level of risk i take.

Anyway, let's focus on getting me some quality sounds rather than the rights and wrongs of the choices I freely make in life smile

I followed one of these around a Sky Ride a couple of years back. It was bloody brilliant. Chap was playing music I like too.

I don't ride with headphones personally. I do on occasion play music through the phone speaker and put my phone in the chest pocket of my jacket. It isn't loud - if a car passes you can't hear it - but out in the country in the dark it's quite a nice experience.

I have a pair of these:
sony
They're inexpensive, have good sound, don't block outside noise and are water (ie rain/sweat) resistant. Bit of a faff to put on but don't fall out. I listen to music /podcasts when commuting because my route is all cycle path - if I'm on the road I tend not to.

I have tried many over the years. I do solo off road only so they get plenty of abuse with the terrain. I now swear by Yurbuds. They haven't fallen out of my ears since I bought them about a year ago, they are comfortable for long distances and they are engined to let a certain amount of ambient noise in so that you can still hear what is going on around you (ish). I bought ones that you can control the music player with (volume up and down, skip tracks, pause etc.) which is an advantage. The sound quality is good and I have even had conversations with people when they call me using the in line mic and they have been impressed with the quality. I don't have a bad thing to say about them for this purpose.

Ah, sorry, just noticed that you don't want in ear ones. Er, ignore my previous post. As you were chaps, nothing to see here.

If you must you want a pair of the old 'none covert' PMR earpieces than hang over the ear or a old skool 80s style foam covered walkman earphones that just sit over the ears rather than act as an earplug ...

I've got some of the bone conduction ones, got them for running - they work really well, and have the added bonus that you can hear what's going on around you at the same time as listening to music.

Which ones have you got?

Thanks for the other replies, in ear is a nono for me now, one burst eardrum is enough, I'm not risking another irked

thumbup thanks, I've just bit the bullet and bought the Bluetooth ones. Strangely they seem even better when I wear them outside my skull cap.

It's a bit weird being able to listen to music with an ear full of cotton wool...

what sort of music do you listen to? i was tempted by a pair of the bone conducting headphones in the summer, but held off due to reports of very weak bass. do you have any views on this?

I've never seen aftershocks before they look really, cool. I like the sleekness of them they can fit around my winter hat!

Do you get much wind noise off them, I too wear headphones ( used to be apple ones) Bose sports ones but they generate quite a lot of whinnies and need to be turned up which isn't that great. not on 3+ hour rides.. get a numb brain.

Hard to tell today as it was windy and I had my skull cap on which generates a fair bit of noise in its own right. I also had cotton wool in one ear paperbag

I'll report back in due course when I can review them properly smile
