£600k cycle lane hospitalises three cyclists in 24 hours.
Discussion
...And injures a fourth and manages to entice a car into becoming wedged. If you looked up the definition of poorly thought out, it would be this scheme, a section of cycle lane with a rounded kerb catching riders out.

Half of me believes people should be responsible for themselves but with so many hurt inside such a short timespan it would seem to be a bad design.
I particularly dislike the council spokesperson claiming they couldn't comment until they'd seen the police report. As if no one else's opinion or the stats themselves are to be ignored.

Why were they cycling on the kerb? Surely if they stick to the middle of the lane rather than wobbling around near the kerb then they wouldn't have fallen off it?
As for the motorist, must have just been a moron...
There's a junction you come out of before it and requires you to crossover the road to join the cycle path. So as you move across as quick as possible to get out of the way of the cars behind and join the red cycle path you see this huge kerb in between. Little time to react and adjust for a bunny hop. As for the motorist, must have just been a moron...

That's fine as long as you never change lanes. How about putting kerbs between lanes on the rest of the road, would you blame motorcyclists for wobbling near the kerb when they fell off?jogon said:
More lunacy from the Green nut jobs of Brighton and Hove.
You'll need to expand on that. It's a cycle lane, most of us here would generally regard that as a good thing, separating cars & cycles. It's been poorly designed, I think is a fair assertion. What is the lunacy? Strong words, I'd be interested in an explanation.Abagnale said:

The topic first started out in the News and Politics section but was moved by the mods. The £600k poorly designed cycle lane, like meat free Mondays, the rubbish piling high in the streets, the constant traffic jam that is central Brighton and top it off the £30m debt saddled on the local tax payer to fund the environmental eyesore that will be the i360. I think that justifies the lunacy label.
You're equating a poorly thought out kerb on a small section of cycle path with a whole council's set of policies. I don't think you've thought this through at all well.
Although I agree entirely with the balls up the greens have made of the place, but on this occasion it's like pointing at a pothole & declaring there's been a communist revolution, it doesn't compute in the slightest, although it's very PH.

A bit like the £1.7m renovation in southampton that has completely naffed up cycle lanes at the bottom of the itchen bridge.

Serveral accidents have happened here now. Cyclists are forced up the left hand side of traffic turning left, when they are going straight on. Not to mention the awful way you have to ride to turn right!
they have now had to put up extra signs to show drivers that cyclists maybe going straight on.
Oh and this beaut of a video

Why start the thread in the first place then if it's just a poorly thought out kerb on a small section of cycle path? Hardly ground breaking news is it? Because it may be of interest to cyclists? Particularly in Brighton. Who knows, maybe I've saved a couple of A&E trips whilst you have been whining about local councils. And incidentally, as the OP, this topic was always in Pedal powered, never in NP&E. News has nothing to do with anything.Edited by Abagnale on Monday 22 December 10:18

That piece of crap is exactly what is wrong with almost all new facilities for bikes. It takes riders off roads where they are established on the 'priority' route, and places them alongside it, yet requires them to "Give Way" to traffic which is leaving the 'priority route' or joining it, and therefore not yet "established". Why the juddering f**k would I leave a route which requires joining traffic to "Give Way" to me, and join a parallel "safe" route which slows me down by requiring me to now give way at every side turning, driveway, and business access point. I don't need to be separated FROM traffic. I f**king-well AM traffic, and the sooner some of the utter 'tards driving motor vehicles realise this, the better for all of us. "Safe" cycling facilities making journeys MORE dangerous? Who'd have thunk it?
