Steve Abraham - One Year Time Trial.
Discussion
Always one to look for the silver lining, that 10 day defect to Kurt was always a disadvantage, also he's now got 3 months experience of the relentless demands of the challenge.
I'd love to see him set off again in 6-8 weeks time and be able to use the fitness and experience thus far, but that's all reliant on his injury being 100% healed and whether he can dedicate the time and finances to start a new 12 month cycle.

ste news indeed that Steve has been injured. I tried to do 200 miles over 3 days last week, between the snow, rain and freezing cold I came up short by 20 miles. How he was managing to do similar mileages in January shows how determined he was.
Hopefully he can recover quickly and get back on the saddle soon.

Seems it's all over...

...I have to confess that I haven't followed him too closely, so not sure what exactly is going on.

tommy godwin's record has been broken by kurt:

i could never see how steve was going to carry on after the accident last year.
there's a guy called bruce berkley who starting an attempt but he's been disqualified through non compliance. not sure what will happen next.
it's a pretty mad and pointless record to try and break. that said i have been fascinated by it!

I think if Steve was doing this in a more competitive manner and basing himself somewhere more hospitable he'd be a big contender. It can't have been easy battling through the weather we've had this last year. Hopefully this attempt has given him a good enough platform to attract the support he'd need to do that. I'd be looking to base myself in Spain or to summers in England and winters in Oz.
bear in mind that tommy did it in the uk in 1939 / 40, so it is achievable. looks like they just don't make 'em like they used to! some of kurt's ride stats are astonishing. 200 miles with 500 feet of climbing in the warmth of florida sunshine vs nearly 5000 feet of climbing over 200 miles in the british winter. big difference. but don't get me wrong, doing over 200 miles per day for a year is an astonishing accomplishment. it's just not really comparable in terms of terrain. i think the record should be based on distance AND elevation to have any relevance to the original record. but i think this has already been debated ad nauseam on steve and kurts websites. either way well done kurt.
I think it's the weather that's broken Steve's attempt. The record is, as you say, the record, but I think as it gets pushed further and further any rider will need to optimise things like their ride profiles and climates if they want to break it. I've enjoyed following all of the attempts and I'm in awe of all of them, especially Tommy's.
