What a shame! I did wonder why there was no ride uploaded to Strava when I looked very late last night.

He has 2500 miles on Goodwin, which is about 2weeks riding? How long does a broken ankle take to heal?

A post on Facebook seems to suggest he may need surgery. Not a chance will he be fit enough to finish it if it does. Feel sorry for the man. It's a lot of miles for nothing now!

What a stty way to be sidelined. Here's hoping he recovers as well as he rides and that he'll be able to have another pop once he's done so. His 'year' can start any time, remember.

Always one to look for the silver lining, that 10 day defect to Kurt was always a disadvantage, also he's now got 3 months experience of the relentless demands of the challenge.

I'd love to see him set off again in 6-8 weeks time and be able to use the fitness and experience thus far, but that's all reliant on his injury being 100% healed and whether he can dedicate the time and finances to start a new 12 month cycle.

I done a notional 100km Saturday and specifically logged in that evening to see Steve's progress as I found it very hard work with the strong blustery wind and rain. Gutted for him!

Here's to a speedy recovery and another attempt in the future....

ste news indeed that Steve has been injured. I tried to do 200 miles over 3 days last week, between the snow, rain and freezing cold I came up short by 20 miles. How he was managing to do similar mileages in January shows how determined he was.

Hopefully he can recover quickly and get back on the saddle soon.

Anyone still following this? He's only 5k behind the record, despite being off the bike for some time earlier in the year. Currently knocking out 200+ miles a day, every day.

The side by side comparison to me is rather amusing!

Seems it's all over...

...I have to confess that I haven't followed him too closely, so not sure what exactly is going on.

I got the Youtube link from an announcement by the club admin here... https://www.strava.com/clubs/166580

He did seem to be struggling over the last few days.

Must be hard doing it in a virtually non-funded way like he has.

tommy godwin's record has been broken by kurt:

http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/latest-news/am...

i could never see how steve was going to carry on after the accident last year.

there's a guy called bruce berkley who starting an attempt but he's been disqualified through non compliance. not sure what will happen next.

it's a pretty mad and pointless record to try and break. that said i have been fascinated by it!

I think if Steve was doing this in a more competitive manner and basing himself somewhere more hospitable he'd be a big contender. It can't have been easy battling through the weather we've had this last year. Hopefully this attempt has given him a good enough platform to attract the support he'd need to do that. I'd be looking to base myself in Spain or to summers in England and winters in Oz.

bear in mind that tommy did it in the uk in 1939 / 40, so it is achievable. looks like they just don't make 'em like they used to! some of kurt's ride stats are astonishing. 200 miles with 500 feet of climbing in the warmth of florida sunshine vs nearly 5000 feet of climbing over 200 miles in the british winter. big difference. but don't get me wrong, doing over 200 miles per day for a year is an astonishing accomplishment. it's just not really comparable in terms of terrain. i think the record should be based on distance AND elevation to have any relevance to the original record. but i think this has already been debated ad nauseam on steve and kurts websites. either way well done kurt.

I think it's the weather that's broken Steve's attempt. The record is, as you say, the record, but I think as it gets pushed further and further any rider will need to optimise things like their ride profiles and climates if they want to break it. I've enjoyed following all of the attempts and I'm in awe of all of them, especially Tommy's.
