It's all relative though. Nobody needs a carbon frame or fancy GPS or £200 Oakleys or.....
I haven't got any of them either, although I do use a Garmin 500 for heart rate and post race analysis.I dont have a pair of deep rims because if i'm going to do it i want to do it properly (enve with CK hubs) but i dont judge anyone for having the money to do it
life is far to short!
If you have the money then why not, can't take it with you. They will last you ages and who gives a stuff what anyone thinks, if you like them buy them.
Fair play to anyone that can afford to buy a 5/6/7k or more bike or expensive wheelset. They probably have worked hard to pay for it.

Or stuck it on finance, there is a reason wiggle and sigma etc all offer finance...Fair play to anyone that can afford to buy a 5/6/7k or more bike or expensive wheelset. They probably have worked hard to pay for it.

GRRrrrrr all those people using those widely used and accepted financial instruments to fund life style purchases!!!!! They'll be buying cars using finance next and they'll never own them FOOLS!!!!!!
Anyone who wants to finance stuff that loses half its value almost straight away is welcome to it, fools and their money.Just because other people do it, it doesn't mean its remotely intelligent.
Good grief is this thread about wheels or Dizzee’s riding objectives & ability?
I’d be asking myself if I wanted a bike that looked fast or rather “is” fast (or by extension go faster).
If the former, these wheels will fulfill that objective. The latter, I’d look at the whole system first then the wheels (but that’s just me). A grand is a lot of money, but not sure they would represent the best leap over what you’ve got.
I took wheel advice here 3 years ago, ended up with Racing Ones (over the Carbones I lusted after). They are OK, fulfilled the job at the time. Since then, moved on a bit. Looking for Aero improvements just in wheels, probably won’t yield any more than changing the mushroom lid for an Evade or a like (subjectively this may / may not make you look like either a bigger banana or bigger brained / savvy).
When the LBS built up my Madone, the brief was to go as light and aero as possible across the board. Luckily I can ride 38cm Aero handlebars, 0.00 stack height 165 cranks, aero rings; they even gave me flexibility exercises. It is about marginal gains / improvements to the whole.
Wheels were the last thing we looked at. After talking me out of Fernwegs (I thought would look extra natty); we went with an Aero optimized wide Carbon wheel (so like a Firecrest or the newer Reynolds, ENVE SES wheels). I think they were of the opinion, if going aero, go Aero. V shape / alloy tracked wheels (the 404 OP mentions is 6/7 years old) / faired wheels whilst looking racy; do not represent good performance value vs today’s alternatives.
I ended up with the Bontrager Aelous D3 50mm (which has plenty of race pedigree), and rides nicely (DT Swiss 240 hubs, and evidently Zipp build the rims). This type of wheel starts a little out of your budget maybe 1500 or less (Easton also do the EC90 55 at this price which is now aero optimized), but well worth looking at – you might even get Wheelsmith to build you something similar for about a grand. I use these as my all year round / winter wheel (never had a problem with braking in the wet with the correct pads). Given their wider aero profile, I’ve never had a problem with snatching and cross wind (although maybe been lucky). The only downside is a bit of rub off the aero brake.
I do have some SES 6.7s (on CK Hubs); but you’d be bloody hard pushed to tell the difference (although one day Jodie Marsh will see me riding them…..).
Is this sensible advice, I dunno. Perhaps the answer really is Fernweg.

Well that makes even less sense than normal. The other 2 wheelsets are a grand, the Firecrests normally double that? Eh? I though he meant the old style 404s.
If he's putting the Firecrests on the list then, I'd be comparing against Bora Ultras, SES, Reynolds Assault etc etc.
They're always on sale somewhere though. If he's putting the Firecrests on the list then, I'd be comparing against Bora Ultras, SES, Reynolds Assault etc etc.
I don't think there is a true comparison between the Zipps and the others, it is true.
With ref to the money side of things, the "branded" carbon wheels I've had (Zipps, HED) I've always bought second hand, and have always sold them for within £50 of what I paid for them.
Yes, they are expensive, but (as long as you don't crack them) you get your money back when you move them on.

True, just had a look. At 1500 the Firecrests are a bit of a steal. Why are the Fulcrums and Campagnolos on the comparison list, better stickers?
You have just summed up my entire thread / choices. If he's putting the Firecrests on the list then, I'd be comparing against Bora Ultras, SES, Reynolds Assault etc etc.

I've narrowed them all down after hefty research. I settled on pretty much the same as your suggestions. My Zipp 404 option is for a current set. £1499 is the price - I have checked it out in depth.... 2014 wheelset / campag, dark label, and at a local bike store to me at an £800+ saving.
Bora Ultra - not made yet. They are coming.
Whatever I get, it's to me a major change. Wheels are the best upgrade to a bike - that's the PH default response. Whatever I get will finish the Merak off and look amazing. It's up to me to make sure I pedal enough to do the bike justice. So far so good and that's for me to worry about.
Maybe I should go 3T :
