i ride with 155's, reduces knee flex but effectively ups the gear ratio so promotes spinning.

A couple of friends who are over 6 feet tall both ride with 120's, one of them even tried 100's but he struggled to produce much torque, so was spinning like a gerbil in a wheel! We called them "Clown Cranks".

What sort of riding are you doing, and where do you find such short cranks? The shortest MTB cranks on CRC are 165mm...
