Yeh, TCX that's the one, only just got the Garmin and getting used to it. I'm not sure I want to see elevation data beforehand!

Looks like I will have to pop to the station and speak to someone about it then. When it was first arranged there was nothing booked, checked today and saw that the early ones are bus replacement. If that is right SPB (strange because I checked the same website at lunch to get my 10.30 arrival) I may have to re-think the whole thing!!

It would be a bit rubbish but I have just had a quick check and if the trains really are a complete mess for getting to Chelmsford I have a solution which will mirror your route south to Finchingfield/Braintree and meet you there.

I hate trains!!

Tricky to call the time. 10am will still mean a punishing early start for the full montys, but much later than that and we'll be a bit late into London. I think 10am is probably the best compromise.

I need to fine tune the Strava routes for stray waypoints and the exact start/finish points. I'll try to do that tonight so that you all have the most accurate files to work with.

In other news, the jerseys are due to arrive on Thursday/Friday. It's cutting it fine but I'll aim to have those shipped on Tuesday on a next day service.

With the whole route thing, are we "planning" on riding as a group or as individuals?

ie does everyone need to have the whole route with them and plan to ride it solo or if there's a few with super dooper garmins (800 or 1000s) with the route uploaded then will that suffice?

With 15 or so riders I think we'd naturally break into 2 or 3 groups. Any larger than that and it can be tough to keep up a good pace.

Ideally everybody has the route so that we're covered for all eventualities but hopefully at least the majority will have it.

Stage 2.5 looks set to be the fastest stage. May leave Strava on for posterity.

I thought it was around 10 which should mean that we will be able to catch you at the first puncture/cake stop.

I was hoping to just be able to follow people all day and not know where I'm going but I've now uploaded a TPX file of the route so I should be able to follow that and find you.

Is there an 'official' PH TPX file that I could use to ensure we are on the same track?
Travel Lodge is currently showing £53. Might be worth staying over Sat night rather than rushing around and having to play catch up (which it doesn't sound like you will be able to now).

Whatever you do, avoid the M1. It has about 50 miles of 50mph av' speed cameras on it.

I always go with the intention of ending up solo, to cover eventualities. Note that even Garmin 500 can do route tracking - they call it a breadcrumb trail I think (it works quite well I find)

I've loaded the route into my Garmin-800, so us slower tubby ones shouldn't get lost.

If all else fails, there's always the Strava app. It doesn't do turn-by-turn but you can see the route on a map.

If it was Gruffy that told you that, I wouldn't believe him...

On something like a sportive I can understand, but on our club runs, you start together, you finish together.

If there is only a small group of you on a trip like this that has been organised and looked forward to, it would be pretty disheartening to be dropped off the back and left to your own devices.

Having said that, I honestly have no idea whether my legs will go the distance or not. But if they die on me, I will just make a phone call and Lou can come and get me!

When are you guys doing this act of madness?
Your WIki says 8-10th May but the vibe here suggests this weekend

Im still mortified that the bits of Sheffield you'll see do the city no favours whatsoever

Pragmatically I had previously given you a suggestion of where to find food that will be flexible with your potentially unpredictable arrival time and numbers
Chain, but decent, Italian - http://www.individualrestaurants.com/piccolino/she...
Nearby is the "Asian" buffet and Cafe Rouge, plus a meat festy BBQ place which is actually OK

5 mins walk is Leopold Square for more choice - http://www.leopoldsquare.com/
The Brazilian is a little unusual (Atkins diet inspired - more meat than carbs) but decent as is the curry house
The Cuban place used to be a small independent which has relatively recently moved here due to deserved popularity but I dont know if they've kept the magic or not

You should be able to get into at least one of these just turning up, but possibly the support crew can phone to check out reservations when you have an idea of your arrival time.
Fag packet times with a small base of evidence would be top of Holme Moss is 3 1/2h from the end, High Bradfield (lovely pub for support crew - the Horns) about 2h - both allowing for "second hand" legs smile

Chapeau!

oh absolutely, sorry yes I should have said that; it's a fun ride, not a mean one smile and we would certainly not leave people on their own.
