a big THANK YOU for telling me my keys had bounced out of my saddle bag as i cycled over the smooth tarmac roads this country is renowned for... i cycled back and found the keys lying in the gutter on the side of the road.

it could have been a horrible day if it wasn't for her...

I slowed down to 'have a word' with a cyclist the other night and I could see by his face that he was ready to have a go back at me if I said anything critical.

As it was, I informed him that his back light had come off half a mile back.

Of course, he probably would have heard it if he hadn't been listening to his iPod.

I once cut my hand on a metal car ramp that was laying in the middle of the road. I was cycling and had stopped the traffic so I could pull it to the side incase someone hit it.

I caught my palm on a rough edge and it started pissing blood, so one kind driver stopped and gave me access to his first aid kit.

As a result, I went and bought some road tax.

It's not an email TAX, it's an email FUND LICENCE. It's totally different.

*Ahem!*

"email EXCISE DUTY" if you please... wink

The "Road Fund License" died a death in 1936. The "Road Fund" itself was wound up in 1955. The revenue raised from taxation of motor vehicles, whatever you colloquially choose to call it, is not hypothecated (or 'ring fenced') for the upkeep of the road network, nor has it been for a very long while. Everyone (especially non-cycling drivers) needs to understand that the revenue from 'road tax' (VED) goes straight to the central 'pot' used by the Chancellor of the Exchequer to fund just about everything the government pays for. What comes out of the Exchequer to pay for the roads far exceeds the amount paid in by vehicle owners/operators, and therefore the roads ARE DEFINITIVELY funded by GENERAL TAXATION.

Seriously, folks? There's an election coming up. How the hell is it possible that we allow people with almost no idea of how they are taxed, to choose their representative, who then forms part of the very government which imposes upon them those taxes, and spends the proceeds? It's mental, and absurd. tongue out

Ah. I realise my error now. Your post count is higher, and you've been a PH member longer than me. Therefore you must be 'righter' than me on any given subject, right? Right.

Now that my mistake has been pointed out, I'll leave you to it...

... I give up.

Sadly not. This is PistonHeads after all, and there are so many humourless handbaggers on here that even when I suspect satire/sarcasm/humour, I presume otherwise and react accordingly.

I'm leaving it there now, though, as I don't own a handbag wink
