I did know a bloke who used to clean tractor parts in his. Swore by it for getting them really clean. He wasn't married.

Aside from the risk of introducing domestic disharmony, I'd be wary of the salt dishwashers use myself. Try an old cassette or chain first and see how it comes out?

Why? Just floss it on the wheel with GT, a rag & microfibre cloth.

Don't do it!

It'll bugger the Walkman up if you put a wet cassette into it!!!!

I know a bloke who took his mums dishwasher apart to remove the trays, so he could fit 19" rims in before painting them. Worked a treat! Said mother wasn't happy but used to it.

or baby wipes. work really well and are very cheap - 80 for a quid in somewhere like aldi. Not as much fun as using the dishwasher though!

I just brush it with turps. Then rinse in soapy water.

Is it a bit risky using degreaser so close to your bearings/freehub ?

If the cassette is going in the dishwasher then it will be off the bike so stuff going near bearings isn't a problem.

You need to put water/fluid in as that's how the ultrasonic waves travel and agitate the dirt/crap.

yes

Unless you're never cleaning it, by the time it gets dirty enough to need a dishwasher, it probably needs replacement.

for road riding, I just keep on top of the cleaning, quick once over every week/fortnight/or ride depending on conditions, means shifting is always good and the dirt doesn't build up. By the time it does build up or is difficult to get off, the bits probably need replacing anyway

Whenever I have taken chains or bits off to clean, they have always broke soon after anyway, but I am a complete heavy handed imbercile though

I guess ultrasonic cleaner et all would be good for restoring an old bike etc

I wasn't sure the £24 would fit all in that I expected - cassette, chain, front rings etc.

but for those who think it's too complicated - now that a lot of gruppo manufacturers are bolting rings together in groups, I'm finding the cleaning of cassettes less therapeutic than it once was when all the sprockets and spacers could be separated.
