Hi there,

Today between 3 and 6pm at King's Staith in York, some thieves stole a Whyte PRST-1 and a PRST-4, belonging to me and my wife.

We had cycled 17 miles to go to York for a late lunch, and discovered the theft at 6 when we were going to start cycling back home.

Unfortunately, we had to get a train and a taxi back home.

If anyone sees or hears anything about these being put up for sale in the York area in the next few days, I would appreciate a PM.

These bikes are very distinctive, and might prove tough to sell on without attracting some attention.

Just found out that our home insurance only covers £500 for bicycles too, so looking at a big loss.

They were both chained up very securely, and are security marked with our postcode.

The PRST-4 has some Easytrack.com and Ducatisti.co.uk stickers on the frame and swinging arm.

Gutted for you.
As its an uncommon bike it shouldn't be to hard to find if it gets put up for sale.
Is there any CCTV covering the area?

Jeez!! Would be easier to sell on £200million of Hatton garden diamonds than that bike!! Hope you get a good outcome op.

Haha, @Stugots. Contacted the police, and jumped through the hoops, and posted a few STOLEN notices around the site where they were stolen.

Reward has been offered, so will have to see if anything comes of it.

I am very sorry for you but at the risk of rubbing salt in the wounds do you mind if I just ask a quick question? The Mrs and I had an argument recently about what lock to take with us in a similar situation - ride to the pub for lunch. She has a lightweight lock - it is supposed to be secure but nothing like I would chain my bike with. I have a lock carrier on the bike but she objects to almost 2kg of lock and chain. I know you said it was very secure but how secure - bolt cutters secure or oxy-accetelene secure?

As already noted, these are so unusual they should be easy to spot if being sold.

Scour the selling pages on Facebook. Unfortunately there are loads of them, but at least posting a stolen notice should h e l as the distinctive nature of them will stay in people's heads.

Edit to add: do you have any better pictures? I'll happily post on the pages I follow.

Try claiming for sporting goods as indervidual items (worked for me)Frame wheels parts of a group set etc.

After a brief discussion with my home insurance company, it turns out that our bicycles aren't covered AT ALL!

So, all you kids out there, make sure that your insurance is up to snuff.

Bah.

{edit} Just by way of explanation, the insurance company claims that bicycles are only covered if they are stolen from my house, not in my shed for example... Bah.

You say that, but it never ceases to amaze me at what gets nicked. I mean, look at this nicked in south london!

Hi Chewy,

I live on the other side of the river to where your bike was stolen from and saw a couple of lads having a good look at the bike at some time in the afternoon, I guess around 2 or 3. I thought they looked pretty suspect (massively sweeping statement of chavvy looking lads on bikes that looked a bit too nice)and were having a squish on the forks etc. They left after a minute or so and I must admit that I assumed it was too busy around there for them to try stealing it, that said I watched someone steal a bike with people walking past not even noticing, at a guess it would be the same people.

The main guy was probably 5'10 medium build, light brown hair wearing a black hooded jacket that was blue from the chest up, including the sleeves. Unfortunately as I didn't see it being taken that might not be of any use.

PM me for my number I will try and be of assistance if you need. Sorry about it man.

Chris

Apologies, I got the timing mistaken. As it was Saturday I remember seeing the lads whilst I was watching qualifying on the beeb which was at 3:35 to 5:00. I think it was some time towards the end of Q2 that I saw them. I tried looking at the Iplayer to work it backwards but it's not playing ball on my laptop. Hopefully that narrows it down though.

@ Watsonator

You have a PM. That's great that someone saw something.

I am off to York later on today to ask around in bikeshops etc to see if they have been offered anything recently.

In answer to another question, the lock I used was a 5 lever mid price job, which connects together with a multi strand high tensile cable. It's the sort of thing which would be difficult to get through with bolt croppers, or a saw. I have another lock of the same type on another bike, and as I don't feel like relying on it for security of any sort, I might have a go with the contents of my garage to see how long it might take me to get through.

Had a bit of a terse discussion with my insurers (Allianz) today, and they aren't going to cough up anything, at all. I thought that we had cover, but not for this. BAH!

No cable lock will stand up to a set of bolt cutters I'm afraid frown

Try setting up a google alert as well: https://www.google.com/alerts

It'll let you know any time anything new is listed and they should be rare enough for it to work.

Hi,

You might want to check out this ad on gumtree.

http://www.gumtree.com/p/bicycles/whyte-prst-1-4-m...

The seller doesn't appear to know if he's selling a PRST1 or a PRST4 (or perhaps both?), and he's not a million miles from York. He is however a vast distance from the bike pictured in the ad, which is my bike, in my hallway, in my house in London...

Well spotted and welcome to PH!
