All this shouting most riders in groups seem to do now really puts me off going out in groups. There is absolutely no reason to shout about any obstacles instead of just using hand signals. Just shouting 'hole' is of absolutely no use to anyone. 'car' is another good one. Like you can't see or hear the fking thing yourself. Certainly does little for the image of cyclists from a bystanders perspective too.
I disagree; there are plenty of times when shouting is needed. For example, when stood up (ever tried going one handed while climbing out of the saddle? It's impossible). Or when you have a water bottle in one hand and don't want to take the other off. Or, for example, when you have to quickly avoid said hole yourself. Basically, at any time where taking a hand off is remotely dangerous.

edit; whoops, opened this post first thing this morning, just replied.....seems I was a little late to the party biggrin

Alot of riders ive been out with just shout at the top of their voices and dont signal even not at speed! Accounting for the state of the roads in the UK in general that means a hell of alot of shouting which gets tiring pretty quickly.
I think that's to the detriment of those riders then, and the ride you're on with them. Hand signals are preferred, but shouting is useful; probably 5% are shouts (certainly amongst my groups).

Pointing down and left means there is a hole to the left.
Pointing down and right means there is a hole to the right.
Shouting "HOLE" means there is a hole directly in front of me that I'm about to go bouncing through.
In practice that works, but no one limits their shouting to that unfortunately. Most use the wrong terminology for cars infront and behind also, which causes more meaningless shouts!

"Car up" or "car down" confuses the hell out of me.

What's wrong with "car front" or "car back" ??

Agree, some groups obviously better than others. Normally the more experienced groups of riders will be pretty much shout free!

Sounds like you rarely ride a group?.....when you do ride in a fast group regularly you will almost certainly understand why you want any messages to be passed down the group

When you are riding on a club ride in the fast group at about 9 to 12 inches or less off the wheel in front of you and concentrating hard on not hitting the guy in front of you and also staying on the pace the last thing you want is to hit a pot hole or obstacle in the road and cause a crash to the rest of the group. I'm talking about riding at around 24-25mph on the flat in a big group. You are concentrating so hard that you need these kind of warnings.

Image wise; have you ever participated in a race and heard the peleton shouting all kinds when they are averaging about 24mph-25mph over a 50 mile or so race where a very high level of concentration is required not to hit anyone in the peleton or anything either on or in the road?

Especially as within every club riders call up or down differently!

Another unnecessarily abusive post in this previously helpful subforum. Can we please be nice to each other? Or are we to go the way of the rest of PH now all the decent folk have left?
I missed the 'abusive' part, remind me where it was?

I'm assuming this bit:

Oh de dums, did the bigger boys shout at you? biggrin What an absolute crock, you really have very little knowledge or experience of group riding.
Really not needed and comes across rather rude.

If you are at speed say downhill and cant take hand off bars then just following the riders wheel in front should be enough to avoid any holes (you hope rider infront sees holes in time). Your right it probably is pointless shouting on your spin bike in the gym wink
