The turn on the V718 course is very close to my inlaws and, as I was there yesterday afternoon, I had a wander up to watch a few riders in the Team Swift 10
Last time I spectated was when sir Brad rode and my first observation is that the way he dealt with the turn (two roundabout job over a dual carriageway) was easily a couple of seconds better than anyone did yesterday. Some of the lines taken yesterday were simply wrong.
Anyway, I saw Hayley Simmonds on her way to her new record 19.18 and James Gullen on his way to matching the 17.20 record too.
Whilst I think anyone riding on that road is bonkers, I tip my hat to the many fast times achieved yesterday. Most riders were working hard and ir was a good event.

Some of the times being done on the "V" are bonkers! Once upon a time (nearly 10 years ago) I was a semi-decent TTer and had a very very short-20 as my PB at 10 miles. This would get me seeded on most local 10's and in 2008 I entered the national 10 and was effectively the 35th fastest person entered (obviously I realise there would be a number of faster people then me that didn't enter), yet at yesterdays event on V718 my pb would have been 65th place
I would say 90 secs is a good estimate for jumping onto a TT bike. It could be much larger once you've got a decent position sorted.
My first club ten was a short 22 on my roadbike (not a great course tbf) and I went and did a short 19 not that long after I think when I got a TT bike (on a quick course)

I've just signed up to do my first 10 mile TT (Bristol South CC event on U101). It'll be the first time it hasn't had a run either side so I need to get my head around squeezing that extra out. I'm still new to a TT bike so closing the power gap to my road bike. Last duathlon I was about 10% down on power but a good 90 seconds faster on the bike leg in windier conditions.

That's encouraging to read. Today's 22:55 was in traffic with several roundabouts and junctions rather than a proper course. I doubt I'll make quite the same progress you have from the early days! Sounds like I wouldn't be totally wasting my time with a TT bike though. I'm not expecting to ever be taking wins but it'd be nice to put in respectable times. My first club ten was a short 22 on my roadbike (not a great course tbf) and I went and did a short 19 not that long after I think when I got a TT bike (on a quick course)

Took part in my first 10 mile TT today. It's an inter-club league near Ilkley, West Yorkshire. Course is V818 and has a slightly convoluted route involving three 180-degree turns at roundabouts. Only standard road bikes are allowed (no TT bars, wheels <35mm deep). Fairly happy with a 24:43 for my first TT (263 W average). Fastest time was 23:03 at 396 W !
I've now had four attempts at 10 miles. Three on the same local course and the course near Bristol mentioned above. At the local one I've managed to bring my time down from an initial 24:16 to 23:12. One more go before it wraps up for a year. I'd like to dip under the 23 minute mark but that may have to wait until 2018. The TT near Bristol was interesting. Got stuck at the roundabout turnaround point for what felt like forever and had to overtake two traction engines! It was also a little lumpier than the other course and as a consequence my slowest of the lot. No changes on the bike or equipment throughout so I'll consider over the winter whether there are any quick (and cheap) wins there. I have a few spacers I could begin to work out now as a starting point.
From my experience of at the start of the decade it takes a couple of goes to 'get your eye in'. Then the painful grind of taking a few seconds here and there begins! Unless you start at a really low base that is. I see people doing parkrun and over 6 months go from 40+ mins down to high 20s with a degree of envy!
