I've got a spare set of lightly used Shimano SPD-SL pedals in the garage which can be yours for beer money if you PM me.

I find that mountain bike spds (e.g. M520s) in conjunction with an mtb race shoe is a good combo. Easy to clip in, the sole of the shoe is just as stiff as a road shoe (as it's often exactly the same just with some extra rubber stuck on), and you'll be able to walk about easier if need be. I'd never go back to flat pedals now.

SPD for commuting

Get the velcro dhb shoes from wiggle and upgrade as and when.
