It's hypnotic watching it and a great idea, haven't the Dutch got a double decker roundabout with the top one for just cyclists?

What were those guys just doing with that sheet in the middle of the roundabout? I clicked the link and there were 3 guys folding up what looked like a sheet with something in it stood next to a car, they walked off with the sheet and the car drove off :/

I'm planning to do a ride around Holland next year, where is that double roundabout? I feel I need to include a visit to our trip!

That's just brilliant.

And only makes me more depressed and angry that such a leap of infrastructure in the UK seems even further away. To me the 2012-2013 Golden Dawn of British Cycling already seems like a long distant memory of hope and optimism.

Just stick it up in General Gassing, step back and marvel the vitriol and ignorance...

Whenever I go to Amsterdam or just about any other town in The Netherlands, you can always tell who the British people are, they are to be found walking in the cycle lanes.

Hovenring. Its a cross roads underneath. Sadly our government and local authorities are too backwards to spend money on similar things.

They need to think about repairing the existing roads first!

First day today of biking to work and it makes you realise what sh*t state our roads are in.

TRL have had a go at this, problem is that our laws don't allow it at the moment. Oh and the shear amount of space you need.

Space seems to be the key thing this and similar ideas. If we had more room nobody would mind bus lanes and cyclepaths, but when they take the space out of the road it is annoying. With hindsight there are loads of things that could be done better, including roundabouts like this (where appropriate, obviously it isn't going to work on a normal busy road), but we just don't have room for it now frown Maybe there should be some changes so that road builders and property developers are required to work together to leave room for future expansion (including bigger roundabouts, flyovers, extra lane for car/bike/bus/tram), although then that would upset the greens if we reserving chunks of greenbelt for future tarmac. Argh!

Welcome to the world of highway engineering! You've forgotten where all the extra cars on the road are going to park!

This is the bigger problem, too many cars with nowhere to park other than on the roads, too many cars used for short journeys, too many cars clogging up our streets.

As beautiful and hypnotic as it is, I can't see this ever working here.

Not without serious driver education. By segregating the cyclists and then having them have to physically cross traffic again (i.e. to go straight over), I think you're putting them in more danger from the caveman-like attitude of most British drivers.

It works because the Dutch drivers are prepared for, and are prepared to give way to, the cyclists.

All IMHOOC.

The debate itself is moot and will be unless you take overall control from 'the money' and put it with the electorate.

With all the new housing estates popping up everywhere there is plenty of opportunity to start the revolution!

The big thing holding any of this back has fk all to do with driver education, available space or any other bullst excuse that can be dreamt up. The problem is plain and simple... GREED!!!

We're not talking about untested, revolutionary, hippie concepts with the road systems most people want, we're talking about rich fat cats losing the opportunity to cram as many poorly built, tiny st box dwellings into as little space as possible with as little consideration or effort into infrastructure as possible.

You only have to look at every local development around here (Peterborough) to see the grim future, narrow rabbit warren roads with zero parking and very little pathways that often end up with cars parked half on, half off because residents fear leaving their ever ballooning vehicles fully on the road as there simply isn't the space to park and pass by.
