So glad it's not just me that thinks that it's exceptionally windy this year!
I think I've had 1 or 2 windless rides here in Peterborough this year, most days feel like 10mph+, some evenings I've seen actual breaking waves along the rowing lake! Although having said that, it looks pretty calm at the moment... just about to leave the house... I'm sure it won't last!
Try commuting between Peterborough and Spalding, that's where the *real* wind hides I think I've had 1 or 2 windless rides here in Peterborough this year, most days feel like 10mph+, some evenings I've seen actual breaking waves along the rowing lake! No hills and the same wind as everywhere else. Easiest cycling conditions in the country.

Until you've ridden there you won't understand. The wind can come from four directions at once, don't ask me how but it can. I ride into Rutland to hide on the hills, much easier as you get a rest on the down side. It's not just the wind speed in the fens, somehow it has more torque.
I've ridden there on numerous occasions but didn't particularly like it because it's flat and dull. However I agree with the actual numbers rather than the imaginary 4 direction winds or winds with somehow "more torque".
I've also ridden in northern France and Belgium. If you want to find out what winds are really like hop over the channel.

Sorry to disappoint you but I am not TKF
Back on topic how flat and dull the 2nd half of this ride was. We couldn't wait for it to finish.

Whenever the subject of cycling in Anglia/Lincs/Fens etc. comes up on cycling sites the riders from anywhere remotely hilly claim that their cycling has more value because of the greater elevation/gradient/whatever...
Personally, I don't give a monkeys where is windier, flatter, higher, steeper or whatever. Get on your bike and pedal it and leave others to pedal theirs.
There's a local segment to me, "Airbase Descent", that I used to get down in comfortably less than a minute, at about 28mph. It faces roughly south (a little SSW to be accurate) and the prevailing wind around here is...? South Westerly!
So far this year I've struggled to get anywhere near that time/speed. I crest the preceding hill into a full-on head wind, and struggle to maintain 20mph down the beggaring thing, pedalling hard all the way. It's downhill, FFS! It should be an opportunity to ease back, and recover a little!
I hate riding into wind. But I've had to do it a lot this year, or else I'd never have got any riding done. At least that's how it seems. More windy this year than normal? I'd strongly agree with that statement!
On many occasions the wind speed (locally) this month has been up around 15mph, reaching 20mph on occasion. The 20-year historical average for the area is around the 9mph mark for July. I can't find an average wind speed figure for this month, though.

I've been feeling this too - also in the South West (Cheltenham) but I had convinced myself that it was just me being a bit out of shape...
Suffering in the South West here too, particularly as I head roughly north or north east on every longish ride, before turning back for an into-the-wind test to get home!Did 45 miles yesterday and I was thankful that the club member who planned the route factored in the wind and kept it relatively flat so we had some respite.
Good bits included 30+mph on Drift Road near Windsor with a full-on tailwind without even pressing on the pedals. The flipside was a grind into a 3/4 headwind coming back across Dorney Common - easy to see how the peleton gets smashed like on the Dutch coast in this year's Tour as that 1.1km segment strung us all out like a 10% hill!

That was the exact bit of road I dished out some echelon pain on the rest of them, 21mph through there from cattle grid to cattle grid took over 500W. One bloke is still there, perished. Wind must have dropped a fair bit by the time you headed through looking at Strava.
Oh, and I got the KOM down Drift Road with a break away effort Just missed the KOM for the entire length annoyingly as was dicking around at the beginning.
