bumping this thread as i have the feeling i want to do someone more competitive on the bike than chase strava segments, i live in east london, and i cba to join another forum when we have enough lycra clad pistonheaders

how decent do i need to be to do cat 4th?
what licences do i need?
do you just rock up, or should you do some "lessons" ?

i'm not too retarded, i can ride in a group without killing anyone, ftp somewhere around 300 and now a less fat 77kg.

i have no desire to join a cycling club
You'd probably get round ok with those numbers.
Join British cycling, silver membership inc race ticket
Some you can just rock up, others you need to do an affiliation

You'll get stiffed on entry for many things by being private member vs club rider.

Found a few 4th cat races at Lee valley which will work.

I presume with the amount of crashes ? taking a carbon bike / wheels is a bad idea?

LV hasn't got any better im afraid ... Ive raced there the last 2 x Saturdays , Last week our E123 was delayed 45mins while 2 Ambulances were called to clean up the bunch sprint. This week we was delayed 10mins with no services needed. My race wasn't much better , 1.5laps to go half the bunch including me was on the grass or on the floor . Serious dhead "Pro" team rider couldn't ride for st !! Looks like its not just 4th cats to blame . Main issue with LV is its high risk .. Its so easy to bowl round at 27mph , just be prepared to bang bars now and again , trouble is not many can .

How about a bit of offroad? This looks like a giggle as a taster cyclocross race:

Looks like a laugh, but a bit too far away for me.

I've got loads of races planned, mainly CX or XC, but this year there seems to be loads of events clashing, and trying to fit my local fell and trail running races in as well is proving difficult, there's just too many races and not enough weekends. Next free weekend is at Spring Bank, but something will probably crop up, and the dates for the Yorkshire Cyclocross Summer Series haven't been announced yet...

Doing my first stage race at the start of May in North Yorks ... really looking forward to it. Consists of a prologue (2 mile TT!) and a 55 mile road race on the Saturday then a 5 mile team time trial on Sunday before a 37 mile road race in the afternoon ... all on reasonably lumpy terrain. Its a 3 man team and both my teammates are half my age! biggrin

Sounds good fun! I really enjoy the stage races, despite the fact I've held leaders jersey in 3 and only ended up winning one!!!

I'm looking forward to doing a few races this year actually, first in a couple of weeks, lost a fair few kg's which might feel half decent over the lumpier ones.

Yes I think it will be ... only an hour or so from home as well. 33% hit rate once the jersey is on, not a bad return smile I'm not racing till 9th April ... March feels a bit soon ... saying that, the quicker you start racing, the quicker the race fitness comes back. Mainly crits on circuits in March up here which I can't be arsed with ... as above, too much carnage.

I've also fought off some weight ... managed to stay pretty regimented with training and food since Xmas ... although I'm sure I'll reverse some of that hard work when I'm in Austria next week.headache

First round of the Midlands XC Series yesterday, a big field on a course with lots of narrow singletrack. First lap wasn't too bad, but then there were a few dicey moments lapping slower riders, including me hitting a tree trying to get past one. I suffered on the fire road sections, as my single speed was a little undergeared, but fairly happy overall.

First TT on saturday (Fifield 15). Went out far too hard, average HR of 178 and max of 182 laugh, got around in 38:23 - plenty of room for improvement when I get some time to do some riding that doesn't just involve commuting to work and back smile

I was meant to ride that one, missed out due to a few issues. Looked a good circuit.

It was a good course although the headwind along Drift Road and up the steepest part of the course wasn't very welcome!

I had another go at crits on Saturday at Salt Ayre. I managed to stay with the pack but need confidence it tight group riding and race tactics.
