Matrix signs on the motorway just warned of cycling event in LONDON.
Personally I would have seen those signs warning of an event in the place I wanted to travel on the date I wanted to travel and thought to myself "I wonder what the route is? Maybe I should look it up?"

Funnily enough as I live in Middlesex / Surrey I didn't really think any more of it.

As for asking for diversion routes - its normal when roads are closed for a lengthy period, emergency vehicles must have had alternate routes pre-planned so why not? I had an alternate route in my head but sadly that route was closed off too.

Thanks to the only poster that has actually helped for suggesting registering with TFL for traffic alerts, I'll look into it and see if they cover out far enough to cover my area.

I really don't understand why there's all the sniping and mud slinging, calling me a liar, a fool and blind etc.. when all I've asked for is an improvement next time round. Shame on you.

You've answered your own question - the diversion route was closed! As for emergency vehicles, they would be allowed through with marshals to stop the traffic. This isn’t a normal road closure for some resurfacing works or similar where a diversion can be set up.

The OP got ranty and whilst you didn't rant but you did come across a little naive. You said you'd heard all about it on the radio and saw road signs but seemed completely surprised when you got disrupted. You didn't look up the route until after the event. If you're going to ignore the warnings and fail to prepare then don't expect sympathy when you complain about it on the internet.

Again, you seem to have totally ignored my point and gone on a personal attack - nice person you are. Thanks for your help.

Nevertheless it seems you're right and everyone else who managed to hear about it is wrong. Have a nice day. See you next year.

There were lots of signs all along the entire route when I rode it two weeks ago. The only bit I didn't ride was the part between the Olympic Park and Canary Wharf, so I can't be certain about that area.

Because there are just so many signs on the roads it's quite easy to imagine road sign fatigue though, where they all blend into each other and are ultimately easy to miss.

I bet they haven't!!
Internet says-

"On 10 August 2012 the Mayor of London, along with Seb Coe, announced that the 2013 ride would be re-branded as 'RideLondon',[20] a two-day 'world-class festival of cycling'[21] sponsored by Prudential plc. London and Surrey Cycling Partnership, a joint venture between London Marathon Limited and SweetSpot Limited, were chosen by the event organisers to deliver the event for five years."

This is a good point. There were a large number of signs in addition to the RideLondon ones. Warnings of resurfacing, surface dressing, overnight road closures, parking suspension notices, warning of water and gas works to come. All of them in black text on a yellow background, and sometimes fixed to the same lamp posts as the RideLondon warning signs.

Where the complainants are managers or business owners, some of the blame must rest with their employees, especially where their commutes, or delivery routes regularly cross or follow the closed roads. If it were me, I'd be VERY disappointed if said employees didn't flag up the potential for disruption to services WELL AHEAD of the closures. To be leaving it to the day of the closure to plan around it? That's a massive fail, IMHO.

I want a licence to close Trafalgar Square so I can have a picnic. Would that work? If not, why not?

I'm getting up to here with bloody bicycling messing it up for lots of people.

Trafalgar Square is often used for big events. You probably just need a few more people. Say, 26,000. That'd probably make it easily justifiable.

as if we don't have enough already with London gridlocked daily because of feckin cycle superhighways.
Just quoting this bit to show the epic fail.

Presumably you mean gridlocked by motor vehicles?

It's help if you and your 26,000 friends contributed about £1m to local authority coffers and raised about £12m for charity, too.

Sorry you couldn't drive your car exactly where you wanted to for a few hours though. Seems awfully unfair that you were put out. How selfish of everybody else.

If a bunch of cyclists delaying you for a little bit upsets you, your piss must really boil when you're in traffic jams and all those cars are delaying you massively.

fk me you really are an old woman sometimes.
Were you bullied at school by someone with a penny farthing?
No, I'm someone who sees problems that you don't even consider.

Take the Tour de France in Yorkshire and the bloke who couldn't work for three days because his road was closed and his back injury prevented him from walking to the nearest place he could park his car.

And the elderly couple on walking sticks returning from holiday who were told by the organisers they'd have to walk a mile to their house with two suitcases. They couldn't even make it through the airport without assistance.

It's things like this that get my dander up.

I bet he complains about being stuck in traffic.

You never get stuck in traffic, you are traffic.

It would work if enough like minded people wanted to join you.

The "bloody bicycling" events exist because so many people want to do them.
