Whereas I normally find myself the guinea pig for daring to post in favour of such brands, I now see a whole host of, shall we say, unusual posters, appearing out of the woodwork.

I tell it how it is, or at least try, and although I dig my bike, I am a little confused as to some of the interest here.

I stand by my bike choice and posts, but, this is getting interesting.

For a start, who the fk is Sinyard, or Vinyard, or whatever his name is?

Sinyard is the founder and (assume) CEO of Specialised. Its worth noting that their roots are in mtbs, Sinyard, Gary Fisher and Joe Murray between practically invented the mtb and the Stumpjumper was the first real mtb available to the masses, maybe thats where so much of the hate from roadies comes from? yes they are a big multi-national Organisation but thats life, they are a business with shareholders. They have, to some extent, pushed manufacturers out or down a road they would prefer not to go, but if companies didnt pursue that business model, we'd still be driving around in British Leyland ste satisfying ourselves that we were keeping the men from Dudley in work.

A lot of the ambivilence towards this De Rosa SK pinin by some including myself on this thread is the fact its nothing new, its shiny, has deep rims and an assocition with a very respected design house but in terms of actual bike, its a bit dated. The rear triangle looks too much like the Aeroad and it doesnt feature any of the newer innovations you would expect on a bike with a curver seat tube like faired brakes, its just a nice frame with the pinin name on the side and super record bolted on.

But thats not to say they are bad in any way, manner, shape or form, just that they dont float my boat. Its no secret I want a new Cervelo, I dont really care that they have no roots in the foothills of the Dolomites, that most of their bikes are bought my triathletes, what they have is men in white coats in laboratories doing stuff.

I like brands who appear to push the sport on, a lot of the things that follow are subject to debate as to who actually pioneerred them but its generally aggreed that Look and Time were the first to really develop carbon fibre as a viable frame material, Canyon/Cervelo developed squoval tubing, Trek developed the IsoSpeed coupling, Cannondale developed BB30... regardless of whether these are genuine innovations or even adopted by the massses, its trying new things and thats what the likes of Specialsed and BMC et al are visibly doing. Thats not to say I dont like brands who dont, just that whatever they have to push the brand is usually all down to subjectivity and tapping in to tradition and the past. I did ask the other guy what else brands like De Rosa offer bar a link to tradition but he shirked the question and spun it round whichi I think was quite telling.

But yeah, we care too much about this sort of thing. Your bike is nice, my bike is nice, there are thousands of people who would love either.

BB30 -- like virtually all press-fit BBs, is known more for creaking than anything else, and requires dedicated cranks and frame to do the same job as a traditional BB. And the Iso speed coupling -- um, revolutionary how?

Let's be honest, the use of carbon is the only real "game-changing" bit of innovation in road bikes over the last 25 odd years, and frames were pioneered by Kestrel, Look, and Colnago. Time didn't even exist in '86.

Nevertheless, none of these wonderful small, old-school companies fit the Spec/Giant mold. They are the exact opposite, yet have arguably contributed more to cycling than any of the profit-first corps in question.

Really? I think you perhaps have an overdeveloped sense of who the 'cycling community' is.

Generally reviled among hipsters, perhaps, but, as evidenced on this thread, many - I daresay most - cyclists have no idea who he is.

Maybe it's a US thing. Never heard such nonsense from anyone I've ever cycled with.

I think this is the first copy of the SK ....And funny enough it´s the Costelo SK ...... Lacks a few details like central screw for bolt on brakes and think they don´t offer a 50´5cm top tube as smallest but looks the same... though I have not checked the exact dims´. Makes you wonder how if would ride against the 3k euro plus Real version.

Interested to hear your comments as I am buying a new bike and wanted another De Rosa but so suspect of the radical price differences in carbon from the Makers and the China no names .
